A few weeks ago, I sat at my computer screen, iTunes blaring, totally amazed. What was blasting out my speakers? Nothing other then Streetlight Manifesto’s debut album, Everything Goes Numb. When I first bought this album, I was expecting something very good, considering all of the reviews I had read about it in the past. When I popped it into my computer, I was full of excitement, anticipating the best. Boy, did I get it. As soon as the first track had ended, I was blown away. Extremely tight drums, some of the best I’ve heard. The horns were outstanding, perfectly synchronized with the music, and sounded perfect. The guitar is simplistic, but still sounds great with the whole arrangement. Vocals are very good; Tomas Kalnoky makes you want to yell out the lyrics along with him.
As you venture past the first and second tracks, you find yourself at what I think is the best song on the album, “Point / Counterpoint”. It is a fabulous track with wonderful lyrics and an irresistibly catchy melody. It starts out soft, and then you find yourself in a fantastic high-speed foot stomper of a song.
After this ends, you flow through some amazing ska melodies and songs that make you want to party. Then you reach “A Moment Of Silence”. I have to address this song because it is the slowest song on the album, and one of the best. With heartfelt lyrics and an awesome arrangement, this takes the place as my second favorite song on the album.
Overall, this album is a classic and I would recommend it to anyone. I suggest even people who don’t really like ska should still check it out. Some people don’t like Tomas Kalnoky’s voice, I disagree, but I suppose it’s a love or hate thing. In conclusion, you should definitely check out this album, it’s a ska classic.
