The imagery of the lyrics and the epic musical tour de force that holds it all together is very enjoyable to me. Although enough has probably been said about Dailor, the band's drummer, quite simply the man has complete and utter control over his set while the rest of the band plays along over top the pounding drum attack, and needless to say, the rest of the band can definately hold their own. Interesting guitar ideas and shredding. Too bad the bass is barely noticable for the most part. We're allowed 10% of albums to get classic ratings on Sputnik? This ones got it.U2 Achtung BabyI love it. One of my favorite albums of all time from one of my favorite bands of all time. U2 just feels completely timeless to me and each song is effortless excitement on Achtung Baby. The deep, ambiguous lyrics, electronic backgrounds, synth lines, and compelling guitar work from the Edge coupled with the timeless songs make this album a classic. Hands down.4.5 superbArcade Fire FuneralArcade Fire Neon BibleMiles Davis Bitches BrewAn involving listen that requires patience but rewards in alot of different ways, and the musicianship is incredible. There are massive songs on this album that feature countless solos and lots of interesting musical ideas that was definately revolutionary for its time period in the jazz community but it is positively a technical and musical jamathon that music lovers with a good ear can appreciateMuse AbsolutionI sat down and put this album on and my immediate thought was "Radiohead who?". I can see the comparisons in terms of Yhorke and Bellamy's vocal styles, but the bands are radically different. Everytime I listen to songs like Butterflies and Hurricanes or Stockholme Syndrome and Thoughts of a Dying Atheist I find something new and exciting about the tune. A very upbeat album with a space alt-rock vibe and killer classical piano and chord arrangements that dominate the tracks. Muse rule.Nas IllmaticI don't give 5's written, but in my mind I know whats a classic and whats not, and Illmatic is, in my mind, one of the all-time greatest debut albums by a hip hop performer ever. Nas could tell a story with a stong sense of heart and wit about him and spit lyrics like a madman with such a calm and easy flow that made each track stellar. The few guest spots on the album do their part and do it well, escpecially AZ on the track Life's a Bitch. Each song has a sense of urgency and sensibility to it that make's it a truc rap classic. Tool LateralusU2 The Joshua TreeBeatiful music. Really strong songs and interesting Edge guitar work that was so different back then with how minimal and atmospheric it was. Bono can sing and write amazing songs. Great albumWeezer Weezer4.0 excellentA Tribe Called Quest The Low End TheoryOld school hip hop at its finest. The lyrics and delivery are good and the simple beats do the job. A jazzy, soulful album with heart and intelligence. A Tribe Called ExcellentColdplay Viva la Vida or Death and All His FriendsKanye West Late RegistrationKanye West The College DropoutSpoon Ga Ga Ga Ga GaSpoon kind of came out of nowhere to me but I heard the Underdog and found it to be worthy of further investigation and I was pleasantly surprise at how solid the album was. A good indie popish feel to it that I enjoyed. The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite SadnessThe ultimate 90's double LP, complete with two crappy songs sung by Iha and a bizzare tribute to chromosomes as well as the song that everybody recognizes for it's rats in cages, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness if the Pumpkin's second best album of their career, and as much as I would like to proclaim it as the best, the album gets very slow and boring at times (partly due to its length). The first disc is superior to the second in my opinion, but Corgan manages to make each interesting in their own way. The next couple albums after this were decent enough but this was their peak (although not a perfect one). The White Stripes Icky ThumpJack White is a nut, plain and simple. There are some really wacky, out-there songs on Icky Thump that definately deviate from the simple bluesy, garage/jam band formula they were branded with. The early title they held with the Strokes as being at the front of the garage rock revival seems like a long time ago when you have the White Stripes making very spacy and bizarre music like this. A good listen but somewhat off its rockerWeezer PinkertonFor as much backlash as this thing got when it came out I have to ask myself why? Its an awkward listen at first and overall a little naked and emotional (maybe a little mushy) with the lyrics but Cuomo can write a catchy tune. Is it earth shattering? No. But it's probably Weezer at their best.3.5 greatKanye West GraduationThe Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink RobotsA playful, eccentric band with a frontman that can write a song. The Flaming Lips don't break the mold with Yoshimi but the album has moments of greatness and beauty. An interesting mix of pop and alternative rock mixed with crazy long song titles. A baby step away from being excellent. Nice listenThe Ting Tings We Started NothingThis is not an opinion on the album but instead an opinion on the song "Shut Up and Let Me Go". I heard it and couldn't get enough of it. Screw Katy Perry's hit single, this is eighty times catchir if you ask me. It just grooves.Tool 10,000 DaysWhile not quite at the bar that "Lateralus" set in 2001, "10,000 Days" is still blasting on all cylinders with masterful mucicianship and some interesting ideas, especially on the highlights (Rosetta Stoned, Right In Two,and The Pot). Maynard and crew are in top form with standout performances especially in the rhythm department, with Justin Chancellor and Danny Carey stealing the show on most of the tracks. The biggest drawback of the album though is its lack of cohesion and the pointless filler outings (Lipan Conjuring/Viginti Tres) as well as the massive Wings For Marie suite that still hasn't caught on with me yet but is still growing on me. Overall a good album.3.0 goodFlight of the Conchords Flight of the ConchordsNot bad. Lots of funny moments but I definately prefer them live as opposed to their studio work. Only problem is that for every phenomenally funny and original song there is the occasional one that I just don't get or don't care for that much. Standout favorite track on the album to me would include Robots, Most Beautiful Girl, Hiphop/Rhymenoc, Ladies of the World, Bowie, Leggy Blonde. Check it.Muse HAARPA solid live album. Only beef is that they didn't cram a few more songs onto the cd portion but other than that an exciting live turn out from Muse. A good disc/dvd combo.Nine Inch Nails The SlipIt was free. Can't complain. Solid production and a good upbeat feel. They didn't put out a turd or anything. Traditional NIN electro groove with typical hooks and the occasional surprise. Good release. The Mars Volta Frances the MuteI cannot say that I have every sat through an entire Mars Volta album. Frances the Mute is probably my least favorite though do to the un accesibility of some of their ambient weirdness that just turns me off to the rest of the album. I have a hard time sitting with my headphones on listening to that and waiting for the actual music. Omar is a guitar genius and the rhythm section is definately a solid core to the band but I cannot stand the ambient experimentation on the album. Good otherwiseTool ÆnimaTool UndertowViolent Femmes Violent FemmesA low key, college rock band with an interesting sound. If you can get past the whiny vocal delivery coupled with that peculiar voice the singer has, you can sit back and enjoy the simple, folky instrumentation in the songs. Weezer The Red AlbumProbably a little soon to tag this album with a rating but my first impressions are positive. sure this album will get hammered for its hoky and goofy feel that it has to it but thats what makes it enjoyable. Most of the songs are simple and catchy but "heart songs" totally blows. Really bad song. Its on a completely different level then Make Believe and that album's suckiness, but again it will be compared to the string of amazing albums they had in the early to mid 90's. Good album, not great.2.5 averagePuscifer "V" Is For Vagina
