I hadn’t heard about them for a while until they were nominated for a grammy. I must say, that with this second album the direction they have taken has brought them much more into the realm of music I adore. A huge Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd/Bowie vibe coming across. This record has honestly blown me away. This isn’t just some genre exercise- MGMT is actually contributing to and expanding on the theme of Psychedelic Rock. This is not pastiche, this stuff is inspired. I thought the first album was okay and was anxious to hear what they would do next. Even if I hadn’t heard that album, Congratulations would have caught my ear right away. This is intelligent pop music; this is well written, thought out, composed music.Secret Lives of the Freemasons This Was Built to Make You DanceThe Mars Volta The Bedlam in GoliathTo really experience why this is a classic album, listen to the entire length of the work with no interruptions. You experience textures and soundscapes that are incredible. Some parts of the work sound as if its melting. Some parts burst with so much energy, you're jolted upright. By the way, this band can fucking jam. I mean, they can carry you for several minutes on some complex sounds in a way that can make you even want to..dance. But then you can't dance because cohesiveness is not the forte of The Mars Volta. Cohesiveness and rules in music are boring. BORING. I feel this band will be legendary.4.5 superbLigeia Your Ghost Is A GiftGreat album with "Heart attack" and "Makin' Love To A Murderer" as strong tracks. Insane time sigs also play a factor in their sound and the vocals kick ass in my opinion. they use a melodic/scream approach that works well with their aesome breakdowns. Heavy, heavy breakdowns allover this album.
