I was not a drooling infant in 1991, so I remember the shit on the radio before Nevermind. Seeing a Nirvana video for the first time made something click in my brain that no music on the radio at that time ever did. You see, the charts were dominated by shit like Bobby Brown, Color Me Bad, and NKOTB. I think 'overrated' depends on time and place. Cobain wasn't happy with Nevermind . .. he thought it sounded too slick and overproduced. Listen to their first album, Bleach or seek out some bootlegs (and there are lots of really good soundboard bootlegs around if you look hard enough) and you'll see where he was coming from. After the success of Nevermind, it would have been easy and profitable to release a copy cat album, but the band went off in a lot of different directions on In Utero instead. As a fan, I really appreciate that. Some tracks worked out better than others, but as a whole, the album is a great listening experience. I haven't heard anybody control tones and distortion in any kind of interesting way since In Utero (well, Tom Morello and some others lay it down, but not the way Cobain did). I give In Utero a 4.5 and not higher simply because I'm sure the next album would have blown my socks off but, sadly, we'll never know.
