It's Thom that unabashedly employs a 'Soul' sound in some of the melody structures and phrasing. It's beautiful and haunting. it also seems to lift his voice and allows a free, confident tone...that also soars to Operatic heights. Soul music proves a good genre for Radiohead to encircle. It provides a juxtaposed element to their trademark dissonance. It allows them to 'play' adding both major and minor chords in unexpected places and pulls against the tension felt in the guitars and drums. I honestly can't rate this analytically yet. I can only say from a gut level that 'Rainbows' is their most beautiful, lush record. It's warm like a big hug and intones that 'The Kid A's Are Alright'. Can't wait to live with this album a bit .
