For those who followed the band during their original run, this compilation is unnecessary as they already own the albums. But for a new generation of fans, it is the perfect place to begin. The first disc of the album provides us with an earlier look at the Police, giving us rawer and harder rocking songs than the complicated pop rock songs that would dominate later recordings. Highlight's of this first disc include the hard edged punk song, Fall Out, The Police's little known first single. The disc also gives us a real feel of what the early Police were really like, with reggae influences combined with Sting's high keening vocals and punk influenced instrumentation. Other highlights of this first disc include Message In A Bottle, Next To You and the classic Roxanne. However, the second disc is where we find the music that the Police made that made them one of the most popular bands on the planet. By this point of time, the Police had shifted away from a reggae influenced sound towards a more pop friendly sound. The second disc includes hits like Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic and the mega hit Every Breath You Take. Personally, I enjoy the first disc of the album more than the second for one major reason. This is because that while the second disc provides us with very catchy and well written pop songs, the first disc gives a bit more. It gives us a more experimental, or complicated feel. Despite this, this compilation is first rate and every single song on it is at the very least, a solid song deserving to be on the disc. A must buy for anyone wanting to get into the Police.
