Unfortunately this record is amazingly uneven and the mid-tempo songs ruin the flow of the album. The previously mentioned openings, 1,320, Endgame, and Headcrusher are crazy almost old school thrash with great energy. It's generic songs like Bite the Hand that feeds and 44 minutes that keep this album from being great. Dave still has some great ideas these days, but it doesn't seem like he has enough of them to fill an entire album. Calling this a thrash album is misleading. He warbles and wails for close to an hour, but no matter how hard he tries there isn't a single defining moment here. The best songs here are some of the worst songs Muse has written and Exogenesis fails at stirring up anything but boredom. This album sounds forced the whole way through and even the hard rocking songs are hollow and not exciting. Someone else said "you couldn't possibly have a soul" if you aren't moved by Exogenesis. This statement is completely ironic since this entire album feels soulless and I can't listen to it without cringing. It's the musical equivalent of white bread. The only good thing about this album is that muse can't possibly make anything worse. The vocals and sound are weak all around. There's no punch to anything, everything is so laid back. It doesn't work for me, guitar wankery is supposed to be nuts and this is too calm. Even the heavy parts don't sound heavy. Panic Attack! got my hopes up, but this just let me down hard.
