Clearly these guys are trying to write good songs -- not trying to show off their technical prowess. That said, they've got skills nonetheless. Everything is tight, the guitar work is superb, and the drumming is spectacular. It's nice to hear a drummer who knows when to use double bass and when not to. His drumming can best be described as atmospheric -- it adds to the music istead of just creating the monotonous jackhammer pounding that is the standard for most metal drummers. And don't worry if you don't like cookie monster vocals (I don't), these guys place the vocals a bit further back in the mix so they aren't so in your face. I find myself actually enjoying the "singing" on this album since the vocals just blend into the overall atmosphere. And that's really what this album is all about . . . atmosphere. Insomnium can create a mood better than most, and they fully develop each of their songs before bringing them to an epic climax. It doesn't get any better than this.
