| Conor Oberst is famous, beloved by many, and regarded as one of the best songwriters of his generation. Quite impressive, considering the miniscule amount of talent he has. On this album, Oberst lone gift-his lyrics-abandon him, leaving him with clunky verses that are in no way aided by the dying goat's bleat he calls his voice. On top of that, his attempts at country-rock arrangements come across as tired and lifeless. At least Ryan Adams could play with a little soul. |

| Rivers Cuomo's return to emotional honesty comes across as homogenic tripe unworthy of a Simple Plan record. The music, completely unaided by Rick Rubin's production policy of "Just record the stuff and sand it over so it sounds 'perfect'" is completely dead upon arrival. It seems tossed off and recorded at the last minute; not surprising, considering Cuomo's open contempt for his fans. |
