| There are very few albums that offer the same raw emotion and musical ingenuity that Trent Reznor has offered in The Downward Spiral. The fact that this is a concept album has raised my opinion of it even more. The album, with the help of a little imagine, can open up like a good book, or even perhaps a movie. To hear of someone who led himself deeper and deeper into a life that was devoid of anything genuine or good, into a life corrupted by all of his previous decisions is heartbreaking. Even more so when the protagonist decides that the only way out is through... suicide. It is the only album that has managed to have me pause and think about what has transpired through the 65 minutes I have spent listening to it. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone, but be warned, don't expect to finish thinking of happy thoughts and gummy bears. This is not that kind of album. |
