Korn primarily took influences from funk-metal artists from the late 80's and early 90's (Faith No More, RHCP, Jane's Addiction, Primus, and others.) Then they took their own spin on the style by adding down-tuned 7-string guitars (a relatively new idea at the time) and hip-hop beats. That's basically the sound of the album. But what sets Korn apart from the imitators is the lead singer, Jonathan Davis, who can go from melodic singing to a guttural scream to gibberish in a snap. His lyrics are very angry and angst-ridden with claims of child abuse as well. The whole album is very angry and at the end the anger breaks down into sobbing. Whether these emotions are real or not, they are very powerful and you can really feel the pain of J.D. Detractors of the album (mainly metal elitists) complain about the simplicity of the guitars, the lack of guitar solos, and the repetitiveness. Don't listen to the metal elitists who claim Korn are posers and put aside the fact that there are few to no guitar solos and the guitar riffs are rather simple, and you still have an excellent album. Korn may not be for everyone, but if you are looking for an angry, heavy, funky, and adrenaline-filled album, then look no further than this album. Highly recommended. Now you would have to question their musical abilities as well. Let's just say it's not all image with Slipknot. On this album, they kick serious a**. While they may not be as heavy or fast as many extreme metal bands (a fact pointed out by many haters), they tend to be much heavier and faster than most of their nu-metal peers. Even though they are mostly referred to as nu-metal, they are closer to their metal roots than most other bands. They are somewhere between nu-metal and extreme metal. Lead singer Corey Taylor -also the lead singer of the softer Stone Sour- shows off his excellent vocal range on this album. This includes melodic singing, hardcore vocals, and even rapping on some songs. Then there is Joey Jordison, who is easily one of the best drummers of his time. Unlike other nu-metal bands who play a more funky style of drumming, his drumming is closer to thrash and death metal. In addition, there are two extra percussionists. The dual guitars help piece all this together to make for an extra heavy sound. There also is a DJ, which is probably one of the reasons Slipknot is called nu-metal. Mood-wise, this album is very angry and angst-ridden. Obviously, something has pissed off the guys from Des Moines. The lyrics tend to be very aggressive and angry. Then there's another complaint against Slipknot: the lyrics. While many of the lyrics may not make any sense, it's all about the sound, not the lyrics. One of the bad things about the album is the lack of guitar solos (which I'm sure many agree with me about.) This is another big reason why they are called nu-metal. Overall, this is an excellent album. It's heavy, angry, and fast. It's even has some hooks. The only bad things about this album are the lack of guitar solos and that there are probably more members of the band than needed. Otherwise, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this album. If you're a metal fan avoiding it, give it a try. You've got to give albums another chance before you say that you don't like it. I highly recommend this album.
