Bedlam and Goliath is an amazing album, exactly what TMV needed. After Amputechture, the Mars Volta needed a faster paced album.
I think the only problem with past TMV albums is the 1 minute + it takes to start the album. Sure, it is nice, but four albums in a row is enough. Bedlam in Goliath gives you a nice 1-2 punch and pretty much lays ground on what to expect from the rest of the album.
I think the track placement was very well organized: Goliath, one of my favorites on the album, acts almost like the cleanup hitter. The album thereafter slows down a little bit, acting more like the earlier Volta albums.
I'll be honest though, the first time I heard this album, I thought Omar was losing it; trumpets and guitar were out of place. But the second time around, I realized that the Mars Volta still has it, and this is easily their best album.
