Raised on a diet of Hardcore Punk, Indie Rock and Electronic Dance, The Automatic are the sound of a band hunting through their record collections, blending ideas and genres together in a way that could make The Mars Volta green with envy. The Automatic's secret formula is all based on top of the Pop blueprint, layered with elements of every genres they could think of when recording. 'Raoul', 'On The Campaign Trail' and 'That's What She Said' are all clear signs of this. Whilst the likes of 'Monster' and 'Keep Your Eyes Peeled' both give modern Pop music a much-deserved shot of adrenaline. 'Recover' even sees the band taking their genre-mashing Pop Rock onto the dancefloor, with incredible (funktastic) results. The album's only downfall is that at times the band seem to have too many ideas and things slowly begin to entry Self-indulgent territory.

So in a nutshell:

The energy of Refused + The Disco friendliness of The Rapture + The Pop undertones of Kaiser Chiefs = A strong contender for album of year

After five years of dodgy Electro albums and cameo appearances in Harry Potter, everyone's favourite lank returned in 2006 to show the world what it was missing. 'Jarvis' is Cocker's first solo effort and it's a pretty strong one at that. Sure, the youthful energy of Pulp is now no where to be seen but tracks such as 'Don't Let Him Your Time', 'Fat Children' and 'Running The World' (Hidden Track) sure then make up for it with their sharp wit and heavy humour.
A must-have for any Pulp fan

Well well well what do we have here? Manchester's favourite sons releasing two 10 year old B-sides to promote their new Best Of? (of which I'm currently working on a review for) oh well! I'd argue that it's a bit of a weak move for a band but when the two B-sides in question are the lairier Rock n' roll monster 'Acquiesce' and the pant-shittingly brilliant ballad 'The Masterplan' I don't really care. Not only that we get a live version of 'Some Might Say' thrown in for good measure. Although track #2 is definitely final proof that 'Cigarettes And Alcohol' is just a speeded-up version of T-Rex's 'Get It On'.

In A Nutshell: Just wait for the best of to be released . . . or just download their first two albums for that matter

Another bunch of Post-Arctic Monkeys wannabes decide to ditch their jobs as plumbers and jump onto the Indie Rock bandwagon. There's the odd moment of greatness here, 'Chelsea Dagger' and 'Flathead' are both reasonably enojoyable Pop song but for the most part this album is nothing more then FM-friendly Indie Pop pap!
The Raconteurs Broken Boy Soldiers
*sigh* This should have been a classic. The line up of The Raconteurs was an Indie kid's wet dream. White Stripes mainman Jack White playing along side cult Pop Rock guru Brendan Benson and Detroit Rockers The Greenhornes filling up the rhythm section gap - what could have gone wrong? Well um, alot of things to be honest. 'Broken Boy Soldiers' fails to match up to any of the dizzy heights it's first single 'Steady As She Goes' promises. The album is chock full of filler. From diet Led Zepplin ('Broken Boy Soldiers', 'Level'), under produced Acoustic Pop ('Yellow Sun'), Coffee table ballads ('Together','Call It A Day')
to disposable Pop ('Hands'). When you look at the band's line up and the possibilities that 'Broken Boy Soldiers' could have delivered, it's just not good enough.


My advice? Save your money for the next White Stripes record

My buddy played this record pretty much none stop for about 3 years (since it was released in late 2002 till 'In Your Honour' came out last Summer) and honestly, it didn't impress me the first few times I heard let alone the next 7,4938 times! I know part of the Foo Fighters' appeal is to just come out with simple, honest, Radio-friendly Pop Rock but this is just fucking dreadful. Even it's singles (aka the songs that the band thought were the best on the record) are soulless, uninspired, unoriginal piles of piss that sound like they were written by a bunch 13 year olds in the back room of a Youth Club, not a man who once wrote songs as beautiful and jaw-dropping as 'Everlong' and 'Walking After You'.

In a nutshell: Just don't bother with this record one bit

Although it may ruin my Indie credibility to say this, I was one of the millions upon millions of youngsters who jumped on the Limp Bizkit bandwagon back in the Summer of 2000. At the time I kinda went along with it all - just because everyone was listening to and I was only 10. But listening to it is almost impossible. Honestly, what were my generation thinking when we managed to put this in the charts and make Limp Bizkit one of the biggest bands in the world (at the time). Not only were the band the musical equivalent of a Big Mac meal, their lyrics were some of the worst ever written. I'd type some examples up for you but #1 We all know them anyway and #2 I've just got in from College and I can't really be arsed :-)

Anyway am off to listen to 'Daydream Nation'. Let's us never speak of 'Chocolate Starfish . . .' again, ok?
