Eminem The Marshall Mathers LP
As of right now, this is my favorite album of all time. Dr. Dre's beats range from party bangers (I'm Back) to eerie sonic landscapes (Remember Me?). Eminem's lets loose his depraved and terrifying rage throughout, creating some of the most stirring and thought provoking tracks ever created. Kim and Stan in particular push the boundaries of music, widening the public perception and blurring the line between music and reality.

Between the Buried and Me Alaska
As I see it, this is the best album to be released in 2005. BTBAM manage to create a genre fusion of which the likes we've never seen, something I like to call progressive death metalcore. Yes, these guys can make your fucking ears bleed, as shown in the 2 minute death metal assault Croakies and Boatshoes. But the times where Between The Buried And Me really shine is when they mix in progressive influences, as is shown in the ethereal and bizarre Selkies: The Endless Obsession. BTBAM are extremely technical, and often switch riffs every half minute. The drummer pounds the bass pedal so hard that sometimes it drowns out the rest of the band, and the bassist picks out arpeggios at a furious speed. Basically, they are amazing. BTBAM are the future of "mainstream" death metal, and this album is a worthy achievement for them.

System of a Down Mezmerize
Although this is perhaps the most maligned SOAD album by hardcore fans, it is one of their better albums in my eyes. Sandwiched between two ambient and slow paced releases, Mezmerize is fast and chaotic. From the frantic opening chords of B.Y.O.B. to the bizarre techno riffs of Old School Hollywood, System of a Down thrashes you into submission with their manic intensity. It makes their ambient and slow moments, like Lost In Hollywood, mean so much more. Also, this album displays a huge range of musical influences and sounds. You get everything ranging from techno (Old School Hollywood) to reggae (sections of Radio/Video). So what if it's more commercial? This is still an excellent and enjoyable release from System of a Down.

This is perhaps the growingest album ever for me. This began as a 2.5, but then began it's slow and steady ascent up the ratings, and it very well might rise higher. What's great about this? Basically, it found the middle ground between the balls-out thrash of Remission and the overtly progressive wanking on Blood Mountian. Mastodon can still thrash you around, as shown in the rocker Island. Palm-muted E chord chugging can get terribly old in large doses, but used lightly it can be pure bliss. Contrasting with the thrash numbers are the schizophrenic progressive masterpieces such as the amazing Megalodon, which even offers up some country western guitar fills. Brann Dailor works much better with the band on this album then on other albums, but it still isn't a perfect mesh. Still, this is quite an amazing album, and a necessary addition to any metal collection.

Shadows Fall Of One Blood
This album, although a great one, cannot stand up to the later releases from the Shads. The brutal yet catchy riffs that are Shadows Fall's trademark are present, as are the soaring lead patterns and shredding solos. But it doesn't have quite the consistent quality of the later albums. Songs like Fleshold seem to be veering into BTBAM style tech-metalcore, not a style that fits Shadows Fall well. Other tracks force melody, such as the terrible Root Bound Apollo. Other tracks, such as Montauk, just suck. But that's not to say it's terrible. Crushing Belial, Of One Blood and To Ashes are all superb tracks that are highlights of Shadows Fall's career. Ultimately, this is an inconsistent release from Shadows Fall, but still has many excellent tracks that will keep you listening for a long time.

Caliban The Undying Darkness
This Undying Darkness is a very nondescript album. It follows the abused catchy chorus/heavy verse formula far too closely. The primary appeal of this album, the melodies, are the same metalcore harmonies that we've heard hundreds of times before. It's pretty well executed, I suppose, but Caliban are just one of many Killswitch Engage clones.

3 Doors Down Away from the Sun
Beastie Boys To The 5 Boroughs
It's funny how people think you're good once you start commenting on politics. The Beastie Boys rapped almost solely about politics on this album, drawing huge praise from musical magazines such as Rolling Stone. Now, that's all well and good, but ultimately, I wanted to listen to a rap album, not a political commentary album. Most of the political content is just pointless left wing grandstanding anyway. As for the rhymes: You need to hear them to believe them. They are just so terrible. Often, The Beastie Boys need to almost entirely skew what they mean just to get a halfway decent rhyme. It's hilarious to listen to, and takes away any positives that the political stances could've given this album.
