This album is probably the best bet this band will take, and sadly, this means that they will probably fade away into obscurity. The new album, while much like The Painters Pallet, has taken the idea and style of free jazz, and has applied it even more extensively, doing away with most major song structures, causing the songs to mostly meld together.
However, despite all that, the album is still a magnificent piece of work, displaying a high level of proficient playing and technicality. Also, they incorporated more electronic effects. This album requires a couple spins to get used to, but it really is great.
The only reason why I gave it a 3.5 is because of its almost elitist appeal. I do give them props for doing their own thing, however. If they took more time to make the new album more accessible, then it would definitely have been a 4- 5 star masterpiece. |
