Diorama Even The Devil Doesn't Care
A wild ride of melancholy and ecstasy, between desperation and hope, a pinnacle of Diorama's blend of darkwave and synthpop. Perhaps the best electronic dance-able album I've heard so far.

Evereve Seasons
One of the very rare albums that blew me away as a teen in late 90s when I first heard them, and which haven't lost a bit of their morbid and hypnotic appeal today.

Amazing songwriting, amazing arrangements and keyboards, fantastic varied vocals, "music for people on the edge".

To be consumed as a whole.

4.5 superb
...and Oceans Cosmic World Mother
'Musical equivalent of a flamethrower', seemed unmemorable in the beginning but grew well
over time.
Akhlys Melinoe
Amorphis Borderland
Amorphis go full pop, excel at that, and win. Perhaps their most accessible and entertaining record, exceptionally catchy.
An Abstract Illusion Woe
Anathema Judgement
Angelo Badalamenti Twin Peaks
Angizia Das Schachbrett des Trommelbuben Zacharias
Perfectly balanced for once, full of piano and violin swirling along in a wild-eyed dance. Fantastic bittersweet melodies, both joyful and having a touch of drama. Screams are gone for good and storytelling is at its peak. A classic of 'circus metal' even if there's not a lot of metal left, but who cares.
Anthesteria Beyond Nimbostratus
Anthesteria Eis
Apocryphos/Kammarheit/Atrium Carceri Onyx
Apoptose Die Zukunft
Apoptose Ana Liil
More 'timelapse pop' than previously characteristic 'glacial ambient', still a superb, deeply haunting record.
Apoptose Bannwald
Apoptose Die Zeit und die Dunkelheit
The darker side of Berliner schule, timelapse glacier pop with a larger dose of ambient. "An album for those who hear the forest breathe."
Aran Pimeyttä Vasten
Moody autumnal black metal in Cascadian vein with a touch of dungeon synth, bleak as a day in November. "Two hunters from the thousand lakes" as somebody named it, perfect late autumn mood captured in long WITTR-style compositions. And while some of us do enjoy raw and messy burzumish production, perhaps this is the biggest improvement point on this one. As strong as Veden Varjoista debut, a very talented work in every other aspect, top-notch in conjuring the atmosphere.

Die Sektor (-)Existence(+)
Perhaps the peak of Die sektor's discog - violent, chaotic, intricate, varied and catchy at times.
Die Sektor Applied Structure In A Void
Die Sektor make their first huge step in the direction which defines them as a truly unique, outstanding stuff.
Diorama A Substitute For Light
Yet once again a fantastic galore of darkwave/futurepop hymns, stark and mature this time around.

Dreadful Shadows Buried Again
Dreadful Shadows Beyond the Maze
Duskmourn Fallen Kings and Rusted Crowns
Genuinely surprised that this is not number 1 epic melodeath band in charts, this record is head and shoulders above the competitors, catchy as hell.
Duskmourn Of Shadow and Flame
Duskmourn Legends
Outstanding debut, showcasing that you can do great without inventing anything, yet "if you just do things right it's enough". To the Land Beyond sounds like "our version of Tristania is better than the original Tristania".
Elend Winds Devouring Men
Elend Lecons de Tenebres
Enshine Elevation
One of Lindholm's highs, a very enjoyable travel through space. My favorite Enshine, on
Slumber level, amazing stuff.
Ethereal Shroud They Became the Falling Ash
Evoking Winds Your Rivers
A big step up in consistency and maturity, continuing the path of Bald mountain and surpassing the predecessor in every way. Somewhat reminding Graveworm formula of mixing death, black and symphonic but with quite different sound and mood, overall a top quality epic/folk BM record.
Finntroll Midnattens Widunder
Finntroll Jaktens Tid
Fires in the Distance Air Not Meant For Us
Excellent by-the-book melo-doom-death, no re-inventing the wheel but very harmonious and highly enjoyable. Almost as great as Slumber's classic Fallout.
Gernotshagen Ode Naturae
Much in vein of their Thuringian neighbors Menhir, German nature/folk metal at its best. For fans of Saor, Cain Bardd, Falkenbach etc.
Gernotshagen Weltenbrand
Graveworm As The Angels Reach The Beauty
Graveworm Scourge of Malice
A bit of a step down from the grandeur symphonies of As Angels Reach The Beauty but still very solid and highly engaging melodic trademark Graveworm black-death metal. Waltz of In Vengeance Of Our Wrath is just beautiful.

Surprisingly enough, somehow this upbeat and 'dance-able' Ice Ages is even more appealing

Stendeck Scintilla
Stille Opprör S.o2
Stille Oppror S.o2
A virtually unknown melancholic rock of In the woods' member Christer Andr Cederberg, ethereal, cozy and overwhelmingly sad. A personal 5, on par with Three times seven on a pilgrimage.
Stormkeep Tales of Othertime
Summoning Minas Morgul
Summoning Nightshade Forests
Sun of the Blind Skullreader
Hazy smudged psychedelic shoegaze, doom and black metal in equal parts, very darkspacey, brooding, menacing while cold and still, huge songwriting talent. Highly memorable, fantastic atmospheres.

The Legendary Pink Dots So Lonely In Heaven
My most favorite album of all late LPD which had a number of bright moments already (Angel in the detail, Pages of Aquarius), as in the golden glorious days. Edward turns 72 this year and still creates such poignant poetic fairy tales, hats off.
The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus Mirror
The Void Wanderer Life is Exhausting
Clearly inspired by Mount Shrine's work (with the first track name hinting on that) yet maintaining his own style, soothing mellow drones with some rains in the back. Exceptionally crafted comforting ambient, a refuge for troubled times.
The Void Wanderer Silent Streets
More of excellent foggy ambient in vein of Mount Shrine, perfect for rainy days.
Therion Theli
Tiamat Gaia
Tineidae Exo
One of the best electronic ambient records I'm aware of, with a nod to Vangelis' Blade Runner OST and Berlin school. A journey into the vast space with great storytelling. The only flaw is noisy beginning of 'Metal claws', which does not really fit.
Tineidae & Sole Massif Remnants of War
As outstanding as Tineidae's Exo, fantastic cinematic space ambient.

An Abstract Illusion Illuminate the Path
An Abstract Illusion The Sleeping City
A little less consistent and a bit more meandering than Woe but still pretty solid and well-varied, great songwriting as always. Sounds somewhat crammed in production and clean singing in Frost Flower is plain bad, not many more complaints.
Anathema We're Here Because We're Here
Angizia Das Tagebuch der Hanna Anikin
Sophomore album from German avant-garde wandering circus sees the same unbridled piano-driven cabaret with some metal ornamentation and even trumpets added to the mix, more macabre singing and less black metal screams which is a clear improvement.
Angizia Die Kemenaten scharlachroter Lichter
Outstanding debut which sounded like nothing else, full of haunting waltzy piano arpeggios and violins, dance macabre theatrics with some rather uninspired black metal screams. This unique sound would peak a couple of years later, but this writing venture is very enjoyable even today.

Bad Sector Plasma
Bann Aeschatologia
Gloomy theatrical metal drenched in "medieval" spirit, much in vein of classical 90's Angizia but less piano-driven. Might sound a bit nerdy and poorly produced but excellent dance macabre atmospheres and melodies. Finale of Carmina Necrologia is epic.

BRUIT The Machine Is Burning...
Burzum Filosofem
While it's maybe sort of genre-defining, Filosofem didn't age that well. The first half remains a very raw and immersive music for "when the sun goes down and chill arises from the soil", the second half is rather bland and uninteresting. Distortion on vox sounds great though.

Broken mellow harsh electro synth-pop at its best, the last top-notch album, a little more dancey than previous but still unique blend of medieval melodies and harsh electornics. The cover and the band name make you think that it might be a 90s-worship melodic black metal in vein of early Emperor, and it certainly is, relentless and drenched in icy synths. We've heard that many times but wailing guitar leads and clearly audible bass make this snowstorm of an album stand out. Music for blizzard walks.

Meadow Grove Nyctophilia
Really good and very Finnish dungeon synth in vein of Jaaportit and Nest.
Melanchoholics Solar Cafe
Absolutely beautiful guitar-driven ambient with ghostly melodies, sad and comforting at the same time. Some echoing guitar passages reminding of Canaan both in sound and comfortable detachment, some bleak abstract soundscapes and some violent noisy textures. The sound of being happily desolated.

Melancholy on a summer day, a sensual piano-driven pop with a touch of minimalism like a nod to Michael Nyman's classics in second half of I Just Can't Have Nothing. A "theatrical drama" of an album, very different from Armageddon Giggolo but great in its sad way.

While Botteri brothers do their wonderfully weird guitar In-the-woods magic here and there, overall the album is lacking some consistency. Hoarse vocal delivery in Primordial style does not always seems to fit. Needs more spins.

Tori Amos In Times of Dragons
Haven't heard anything from her since mid 90s but this one is real good, has some Portishead and Twin Peaks moods at times and reminds a bit of Marianne Faithfull's A Secret Life co-written with Angelo Badalamenti. A few poor songs (Provincetown, Fanny Faudrey) and less-than-elegant lyrics unfortunately spoil the overall excellent material.

Wolves in the Throne Room Thrice Woven
Wolves in the Throne Room Diadem of 12 Stars
Displays a lot of potential, however this first attempt is not that exciting compared to the later, far superior works.
Wormlust The Feral Wisdom
Going more plain black metal where Oranssi Pazuzu lean towards psychedelic noise rock but with similar amounts of twisted eerie moods, dead astronaut adventure trips and outer space atmospheres, obviously powdered with some Icelandic volcanic ash. Music for black sand deserts.

Angelo Badalamenti The Straight Story
Angizia 39 Jahre für den Leierkastenmann
How much of a parody is too much? Angizia had crossed the line here and there on this one, which feels like a step down, not enough subtly troubling drama for my tastes. Metal is practically gone so the music now is a spectacle of spoken word, overtures and interludes, still great but not my favorite Angizia. Accordion pieces are great though.

Canaan Ai Margini
Bleak and minimalistic more than ever, to the point of becoming almost autistic. No guitars or rock elements, it's pure ambient darkwave with some abrasive noise strokes. Has quite a few great moments but requires full attention to enjoy them.

The first half is undoubtedly great, if a bit messy, but starting with Autumn storm this begins to lose focus, and by the time an mediocre post-rock kicks in later on this becomes almost boring. Cedar skeletons on masterpiece level, the rest on average, with stupid quotes on top.
Paradise Lost One Second
Paths Of The Eternal Quest For The Sacred Blade

Raison D'Etre Cambium
Technically a live recording, more of the same Peter Andersson's classical soundscapes, a very safe but enjoyable one. Starts gloomy and suffocated but then soars and shines, the second half is great.
Raison D'Etre Requiem for Abandoned Souls
Quite boring compared to The Empty Hollow Unfolds but still not bad.

Shaman (FIN) Shamániac
Shape of Despair Return To The Void
Shape of Despair Illusion's Play
Shedfromthebody Whisper and Wane
Shinjuku Thief The Witch Hunter
Synthesized orchestral loops, minimal melodies, dark medieval moods. Outstanding for 90s, not so much today.
Shire Oak Sempervirens
Show Me A Dinosaur Plantgazer
Nice sense of humor, pretty good post-rocky blackgaze.
Shrine Sentinel
More rhythm and melody on this one, but I much prefer heavier and more atmospheric Celestial Fire and Quintessence to the later Shrine work.
Shrine Somnia
Good work, showcasing the Shrine's potential which will be fully realized in excellent following albums like Celestial Fire and Quintessence.

It should've been released in late 90s, now it scratches the familiar itch but does not excite as it could.
The Knife Deep Cuts
The Kovenant Nexus Polaris
Everything which worked great on Animatronic looks to be present here but feels somehow bland in symphoblack genre. Skipped this one back then years ago, and now it's not more than a pleasant yet forgettable listen.
The Legendary Pink Dots The Gethsemane Option
The Legendary Pink Dots The Museum of Human Happiness

Perhaps the first really good Therion in over a couple of decades, a shadow of the days of Vovin glory but quite consistent and enjoyable symphonies throughout.

Good textured IDM with vocals, a bit dark and even noisy with metal elements scattered around. Vocal delivery is too emo which is annoying.

Vintersorg Till fjälls
VNV Nation Of Faith, Power and Glory

Some mid-tempo romantics - The Spaces Between is just beautiful - some upbeat and straightforward dancefloor hits, a few synth symphonics, Ronan still doing VNV things great. A better later VNV album.

Surprisingly mature and overall really great for a debut, very talented.
Winterfylleth The Reckoning Dawn
Witan Alchemy
Despite the cover hinting on some dungeon synth it's more of ethereal electronic ambient in vein of Vidna Obmana or Alio Die with a touch of fantasy. Surprisingly great listen.

Angizia Des Winters finsterer Gesell
A whole lot of emphasis on storytelling and vocals which take over and fully dominate the whole album, and it does not work well. Great instrumentation which Angizia is famous for is still here with piano, violin and accordion, but the music is mostly kept minimal, progressions and songwriting are simplified and don't have many memorable moments. Don't see myself going back to this often, if ever.

While not an "average" album by any means, it doesn't feel like it's really worth the time after several attempts. It's not exactly bad, it's still Die Sektor stripped of the wild, violent insanity, leaving the impression like "not tense enough". A Forest of Stars Stack Overflow In Corpse Pile Interface
Yet another example of poor vocal choice ruining a rather interesting record, which is a shame. Now we know that if David Tibet would try to go black metal this would not end up in anything good as no amount of songwriting talent and otherwise excellent musicianship could fix the vocal issue.

Speaking of "unhinged" sounding metal this is largely inferior to Morgul's "insane" classics The Horror Grandeur and Sketch Of Supposed Murderer. Speaking of "circus metal", Angizia has performed much better either.

Rome Die Æsthetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit
With just three memorable songs in 3 hours of unmemorable boredom, this sounds like Jerome was forced to issue a triple album.
Rome Civitas Solis
Jerome please stop keeping the three-albums-a-year pace, this became "with a great deal of effort he could possibly achieve mediocrity".
Rotersand How Do You Feel Today?
Somewhat bland, mechanical, streamlined and club-oriented, lacking lyricism they're loved for.

Susanne Sundfor Music For People In Trouble
Svartsinn Devouring Consciousness
Swallow the Sun Shining
Swans Birthing
No surprises here as with all nu-Swans albums, it could've been quite great if runtime was at least halved and had pretentiousness level reduced by 90%. I like it a bit more than predecessors but you can't escape wanting to fast-forward here and there, as for the huge part it's still meaninglessly meandering and failing to justify its mammoth frame.
Syrian Kosmonauta
The Halo Effect We Are Shadows
The Legendary Pink Dots Your Children Placate You from Premature Graves
The Legendary Pink Dots Curse
Therion Gothic Kabbalah
Therion stripped of symphonics and choirs, what could go wrong? Not plain bad but just zero replay value.
Tool Lateralus
Trepaneringsritualen Algir; eller Algir i Merkstave
Tristania World Of Glass
Troum Objectlessness
Uada Interwoven
Black metal played on acoustics the proper way - instrumentally good, but desperately needs a complete vocal part replacement.
Uada Cult of a Dying Sun
Uboa Impossible Light
Very average death industrial with a few somewhat nice melodic passages but that's it.
Ulver Scary Muzak
Ulver ATGCLVLSSCAP
Ulver Liminal Animals
The more I kept searching and waiting for something deeper, the more superficial, averagely catchy and forgettable it sounded.

This is only different from Vinterriket's winter soundscapes in added cliche martial
industrial samples in the foreground, a 100% carbon copy otherwise.
Blackbraid Blackbraid II
As boring, shallow and non-memorable as the debut was.
Burzum Hlidskjalf

Current 93 Of Ruine Or Some Blazing Starre
So hysterical and chaotic it starts annoying from the beginning, it takes some effort not to stop until the end.

Evergrey Theories Of Emptiness
Falls of Rauros The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood
Fen The Malediction Fields
Fever Ray Plunge
The only highlight here is Red trails, the rest is skippable.

Funeral Gospel of Bones
The vocals, while being quite good and clearly inspired by classic In the woods, really do not match well with My dying bride-esque death-doom.

Great in shape and appearance, yet somehow inconsistent and artificial in its essence.
Lacking atmosphere and entirely non-memorable.
Saor Origins
Nice in some passages, but overall primitive and plain boring for the most of it's runtime. A big disappointment.
Satyricon Rebel Extravaganza
Sirenia Perils of the Deep Blue
Solstafir Masterpiece of Bitterness
Largely failed attempt to mix black metal with progressive rock, first track has its brighter moments but the rest is overblown pretentious bullshit.

Wynardtage Evil Mind
Wynardtage Waste Of Time
Primitive amateurish EBM with very simplistic sound, lacking drama or any substance at all, multiple Waste of time remixes are plain annoying. Wynardtage will leap up in style just a few years later, but the starting point is rather dull.
Year of No Light Les Maîtres Fous
It's so boring and low effort it's hard to believe that Ausserwelt was released under the same moniker, could barely wait for it to end.

upd: No matter how I enjoy guitar-driven drone ambient, it's light years behind say Maeror Tri.

1.5 very poor

How you guys handle this whining bleating voice? Music is not that bad though, but the vocals ruin everything completely.

The shortest review of a movie is the one for some silly comedy, named "Isn't it romantic?", and the review consists of one word: "No." Similarly, the title of this album is the shortest and fullest summary.
