At most points it is overwhelming and disorienting, confusing yet compelling, intellectual and dynamic, and the gentle, colourful concluding track Joya feels equal to driving at high speed then slamming on the breaks - it's a kick in the guts. Perhaps intentionally so, given its title "Kick". This is a challenging, addictive, and groundbreaking album which, in my opinion, seals Arca as one of music's most innovative creative geniuses. 4.5 superbArca KICK iiThis is a thrilling, dynamic, surreal, and fiery statement of an album. In the first half, Arca overloads the senses with what is essentially one banger after the next. Tiro and Prada involves reggaeton harmoniously combined with Arca's unique skill in electronic production, and from the sensory overload of Araa, the flow of the album seemingly becomes more dislodged and strange, obscure and unsettling, melancholic, chaotic and even menacing. This is yet another groundbreaking album for Arca, and a brave step into the mainstream that pushes Arca's experimentalism to a new level. Perhaps the weaker spot on this album is Born Yesterday - where the production remains dynamic, yet with Sia's involvement feels frustratingly less memorable and conceptually clear. The album concludes brilliantly with Andro, starts suspensefully with Doña, and pretty much everything in-between veers on the fascinating, to the exceptional. While perhaps less innovative then her debut, Take Me Apart, the production is detailed, rich and heavy. It is also an understated, very ambient-y R&B album. Less memorable moments for me aside (Missed Call, Closure), from Contact, you're taken on a fine flow of an album from that point without any real misses. Moments of genius clash with moments which underwhelm - as in Witch, or Hija. Meanwhile, Boquifloja lacks any attention-grabbing progression despite the appeal of Arca's slightly grungy detour. The album has a cohesive sound; its' atmosphere feels unsettling and dystopian, but it feels like her most under explored and perhaps least innovative project to date. 2.0 poorArctic Monkeys The CarGrimes Miss AnthropoceneLana Del Rey Blue Banisters1.5 very poorMadonna Madame X
