After Oh, Common Life was released in 2014, they took a hiatus just like many of their peers did from other bands of the era. In 2019 they released their first single Demitase. At the time, they told us that their new album would be released in 2020. And every year that has gone by, they had yet to release it. But that changed today when they did a surprse release of their fourth album Higher Lonely Power. rThis is arguably the best album of their career. Lyrically this is Better than anything they?ve done so far. Musically this feels like a natural progression from Oh Common Life. They went the same route as fellow pop punk band The Wonder Years have gone in recent years and delved more into Indie and Alternative genres. While Higher Lonely Power does have its hints of pop punk, this is not a pop punk album. This is an indie punk and alternative rock album. Fireworks have really shown that they are great song writers and this can not be denied. rI know it?s dumb to say that an AOTY contender can come out on the 1st of the year but this really is. If Higher Lonely Power doesn?t become one of the best albums of 2023, then other albums must be pretty damn good albums released. Knocked Loose You Won't Go Before You're Supposed ToMannequin Pussy I Got HeavenOne of top albums of the year. Once I?ve dissected it more, may get close my top of the year. Riley! Keep Your CoolKeep Your Cool Man, Kill Yr Boss, (cries in Spanish), and Ego Peak Mid are probably the catchiest songs I?ve heard since 2005. This whole albums is back to back bangers. They really know how to mix the math rock, post-hardcore and emo influences in a way that most bands can?t do right. Hot Mulligan is the only other band to do it as well as Riley! does here. Slope Freak DreamsReminds if turnstile decided to mix hardcore with Funk and Beastie Boys instead of Grunge and ShoegazeSprints Letter to SelfThis is great. Reminds me of Pixies and Sonic Youth. Lyrically this is a masterpiece. Musically it?s great. Sounds no different Beyonce Cowboy CarterI?ve honestly never been a fan of hers except for Crazy in Love. This is much better than I was expecting honestly. It?s also barely country, but still better than about 95% of country. But it?s more bluesy and soulful than country. But it?s still better than anything else she has put out. 2.5 averageBeing as an Ocean Death Can WaitI?ve never liked this band before and this album doesn?t change that2.0 poorERRA CureERRA has always been generic metalcore and haven?t been that good really ever. Turned this off after 3 songs. Just boring, lifeless, and no energy. Plus the cleans are atrocious
