5.0 classic
Black Sabbath Master of Reality
Black Sabbath Paranoid
Chris Squire Fish Out of Water
Just listened to this album and loved it! I should take this as the final sign to give Yes! a good run - 4.5 starsrEdit: listened again, bumped up to 5 starts
Dream Theater Images And Words
Every song on this album hits hard. I believe this album sits so well because they are balancing each artists contributions to the songs so well, so they aren't too busy.
Fleetwood Mac Rumours
The build up from that bassline in The Chain does things
Frank Zappa Joe's Garage
This album is superb! It is quite long but packs a lot in, plenty of musical moments of Zappa on the guitar, plenty of ridiculous and hilarious moments but nothing comes close to Watermelon in Easter Hay. This is Zappa's magnum opus in my opinion.
Gang of Youths Go Farther in Lightness
Iron Maiden The Number Of The Beast
My first introduction to Maiden when I was a child. The album was played on repeat.
Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly
Kendrick Lamar good kid, m.A.A.d city
King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King
King Crimson Red
Magnificent and beautiful album. Starless is timeless and awe inspiring
Metallica Ride The Lightning
Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells
I remember when I first came across this album, I thought I'd stumbled onto pure gold. I was so glad when I found that it had the commercial success that it so deserved. Sitting down and listening to this whole album is a must for anyone in their lives.
Nirvana Nevermind
Parkway Drive Horizons
Pink Floyd The Dark Side Of The Moon
This is one of the all time albums, but probably my fourth favourite by Pink Floyd (after WYWH, the Wall and Meddle). So many songs on this album invoke such raw feelings and contemplations of life, particularly personally with Breathe and Time. The flow of the album and the concept is incredible and it always feels wrong when I listen to a songs outside of the album. That being said, Money does kind of stick out like a sore thumb. Thematically it fits with album, but musically doesn't have the same vibe. The coin and register introduction is absolutely brilliant. The introduction to Time gives me goosebumps every time and I find allows myself to sink myself into the next 6 minutes of the song and take it all in. I feel I'm going into a full review so might hold off on commenting on each song and save it for a stand alone.
Pink Floyd The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Whilst I love the direction Pink Floyd went under Waters, the Syd era peaked here. This album is truly amazing and would have been phenomenal to experience in life.
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
5 stars and nothing short. I want more and more of this album. Shine On could be a song a band could lead a career on, but they have other albums with multiple songs that have the same effect, they also have a part 2. Then there is the title track which is truly beautiful and even tends to lean into pop music. Welcome to the Machine is a fantastic song in experimentation on sound and Have a Cigar is so much fun.
Pink Floyd The Wall
A timeless album that tells a great story through music. There are so many songs which are incredible on here (In the Flesh, Run Like Hell and the timeless Comfortably Numb), the album may feel like it drags on, but you get caught up in the emotion and narrative of each song that this feeling very quickly disappears. My only critique would be to drop Bring the Boys Back Home.
Pink Floyd Animals
A fantastic album. It leaves me wanting more. The concept, the instrumentation, all incredible.
Rush Moving Pictures
I listened to this yesterday whilst mowing the lawn and had a profound respect for this album. Most of the songs on this album stand out strong, but it is so cohesive and tight. YYZ still causes my heart rate to jump from the nightmares trying to play it on Guitar Hero 2 as a 13 year old.
Slayer Reign In Blood
This album goes hard. Some of the best 30mins of your life.
System of a Down Toxicity
Tame Impala Innerspeaker
The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream
The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Tool 10,000 Days
Tool Lateralus
Tool Ænima
Tool Fear Inoculum
Wolfmother Wolfmother
This is one of the albums from my childhood. It changed how I listened to music and what it meant to me. Easily one of the best Australian albums of all time!
4.5 superb
Black Sabbath Black Sabbath
Chappell Roan The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess
This album (and Chappell) makes me feel like we can do pop properly if we prop good artists up. The singles from this song are some of the best pop of the decade (Pink Pony Club, Red Wine, Femininomenon, Hot to Go)
Devin Townsend Ziltoid the Omniscient
Devin Townsend Lightwork
I was feeling quite down and despaired, I put on this album and it did make me feel better, not happy but accepting. The Call of Void particularly helped me to breathe.
Dream Theater Falling Into Infinity
Dream Theater Octavarium
Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Eloy Ocean
Pretentious progressive rock from the 70s, sign me up!
ERRA Cure
Frank Zappa Hot Rats
The experience listening to Son of Mr. Green Genes was out of body, what a true masterpiece. Willie the Pimp was the only song I'd listened to before spinning this whole record. This may even jump up to a 5/5 after a few more listens.
Frank Zappa Apostrophe
A superb album full of Zappa's classic songs and humour
Ghost (SWE) Prequelle
Gojira Magma
Gojira slow things down on this record to bring out a driving doom sound that really punches through.
Jeff Wayne The War of the Worlds
I remember seeing this in my Dad's CD collection growing up and putting it in the player. From the start of the album I felt like I was grabbed by the edge of my pants and thrown into an indescribable experience. After reading the book some 15 years later I've decided to re-listen to the album and I can say the experience is exactly the same. This is the only medium I wish for my books to be delivered.
Karnivool Themata
Incredible album that has aged exceptionally. Themata is one of the all time songs
Karnivool Sound Awake
This has to be one of the best sounding albums. Listening the Rick Beato break down Goliath (an incredible song) heightened the listening experience.
Kendrick Lamar Section.80
King Crimson In the Wake of Poseidon
I agree with the majority of people that this album isn't as good as their first release, but rather than thinking they've copied their first success, they've built on it. This release is more refined, it's crisper in the direction, ideas and added sweeteners. The use of more bluesy guitar by Fripp and the jazz piano by Tippet (especially in Cat Food) brings a togetherness in a release that is also slightly unhinged. Lake's vocals also hit perfectly with the King Crimson sound.
King Crimson Discipline
The strongest of the 3 releases (Discipline, Beat and Three of). Elephant Talk sets a perfect tone for the album with Levin's chapman stick riff. Frame by Frame showcases Fripp's talent in an outstanding way. Thela and Meta are also standout.
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Omnium Gatherum
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Infest the Rats' Nest
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of...
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Phantom Island
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Nonagon Infinity
Knocked Loose You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To
Parkway Drive Deep Blue
Parkway Drive Killing With A Smile
Pink Floyd Meddle
This album being my favourite by Pink Floyd contains 2 of my favourites in One of These Days and Echoes. I can't give it 5 stars as Seamus brings down the whole album.
Polaris The Death of Me
Polaris Fatalism
When it comes to metalcore (particularly Australian) I suffer from nastlagia bias. This album smashes that out of the window with a beautifully put together album spanning heavy hard songs and melancholic slower pieces. This balance creates a fantastic live show where you can go hard in the pit, then sit back and sing along to some beautifully written lyrics. The last thing to mention is that this album also showcases some of Ryan Siew's best guitar work. The man was a riff monster. RIP. We'll all keep playing this album and think of you.
Rush Signals
As I'm working through Rush's discography, I've reached Signals and I've geared myself up for this syth era music. I'm 3 minutes into Subdivisions and have already decided that this album will be AT LEAST a 4.5. Anything else would be a disservice to Peart's drumming on this track. The sound that Rush have created here is an amazing balance of their existing rock and the emerging synth sound. They have haven't strayed from their incredible riffing sound either. As I'm typing this, Liefson's opening riff to The Analog Kid has started and I'm even more convinced of my rating for this album. I'm so eager to listen through the rest of this album!
Rush 2112
Sepultura Arise
What an opening 3 tracks! Great album that will get you going and coming back for more.
sleepmakeswaves In Today Already Walks Tomorrow
Slipknot Iowa
Slipknot Slipknot
Slipknot Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
Tame Impala Currents
The Acacia Strain You Are Safe From God Here
This album will be an Acacia Strain classic. Everything goes hard. "Six feet further from God, six feet closer to hell"
The Mothers of Invention One Size Fits All
Another Frank Zappa album, and it's another masterpiece!
4.0 excellent
A Day To Remember Homesick
A Day To Remember What Separates Me From You
A Day To Remember Common Courtesy
Agitation Free 2nd
The algorithm sent me a song from this band and I had to expand on the album. It's fantastic and feels my soul.
Alpha Wolf Half Living Things
All round enjoyable and I've been ripping it a few times already. The ICE-T feature goes hard.
Animals As Leaders Animals as Leaders
I'm going to have to listen to this a dozen more times before I can even start to comprehend everything that's going on here.
Black Sabbath Vol. 4
Boundaries Death Is Little More
Excellent punchy album. Goes hard, maybe less clean vocals would have been nice
Buckethead Worms for the Garden
Great riffs and a great time listening to this pike.
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band Clear Spot
Um this is damn fantastic and somehow commercial. Imagine if he had run down this path.
Childish Gambino Bando Stone and the New World
Have listened to this album a few times today and really enjoy it. Favourite is Got to Be
Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head
Coldplay Parachutes
Coldplay Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
Comeback Kid Wake the Dead
Great album, Wade's vocals are iconic. The guitar is riffing. The drums bring energy!
Devin Townsend Powernerd
I need another beer, I love coffee and I need to play this album again!
Dream Theater Parasomnia
Dream Theater A Change Of Seasons
Emma Goldman all you are is we
The second Emma Goldman to blow my nuts off!rNo idea how this album crossed my radar.
Fit for an Autopsy The Nothing That Is
On first listen the album is excellent. Red Horizon is an absolute stand out! Damn it's so good!
Focus Focus II (a.k.a. Moving Waves)
The strong start with Hocus Pocus then finishing with the epic Eruption. This is a superb album.
Frank Zappa Chunga's Revenge
A great mix of instrumentals and rock showing a diverse range of Zappa's talent. Chunga's Revenge is incredible.
Frank Zappa Zappa In New York
Superb live Zappa. A great showcase of his live music that makes me jealous of those who got to see him live.
Frank Zappa Sheik Yerbouti
Frank Zappa Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar
An incredible showcase of the musician that Zappa was. Unreal improvisation on the guitar.
Gang of Youths The Positions
Gatecreeper Dark Superstition
Absolute chuggin fun. Will be watching these guys over the next few years
Hayley Williams Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party
This album is just purely lovely. Hayley is a precious gem and needs to be protected. The lines in True Believer had me wrapped
Iron Maiden Powerslave
Jason Becker Perpetual Burn
This album has the energy that the cover encapsulates.
John Mayall Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton
I can see why this is a classic! Clapton's beautiful guitar work is on full display here. The full band provides a great cohesive collective to produce such a pure bluesy sound.
Kendrick Lamar DAMN.
Kendrick Lamar untitled unmastered.
King Buffalo Regenerator
This album and these guys can write some damn fantastic songs! Another listen and the groovy beats are so enjoyable
King Crimson Larks' Tongues in Aspic
A great album! The opening song was very well put together (I did feel the violin solo was way too drawn out). The vocal songs were great and the use of reverse guitar solos was fantastic.
King Crimson Starless and Bible Black
King Crimson still releasing incredible music. Fripp still surprises with unbelievable talent on the guitar (and I know he doesn't slow down after this). The fact that a good number of these tracks are improvisations just shows how well the group gelled and worked with each other.
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Polygondwanaland
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Flying Microtonal Banana
Kublai Khan TX Exhibition of Prowess
A great album to surround Theory of Mind with. Great energy.
Leprous Melodies Of Atonement
A great bounce back to the their best sound here. A bit simplistic compared to their original releases.rBumping this up to a 4.0, the opening songs are huge!
Liquid Tension Experiment Liquid Tension Experiment 2
Liquid Tension Experiment Liquid Tension Experiment
Overall a great album, but does feel a bit padded with filler tracks.
Lorna Shore I Feel The Everblack Festering Within Me
Excellent singles on this. A great follow up to their debut album.
Make Them Suffer Neverbloom
An absolute classic and I long that their new releases reproduce this, but they don't come close.
Melvins Houdini
This is a fantastic album that took me way too long to listen to. Scratch the last song off though (sorry Kurt)
Michael Kiwanuka Small Changes
I have been highly anticipating this release. His blissful music does wonders for the soul. I particularly enjoy the David Gilmore riffs thrown in there.
Ocean Grove Oddworld
This album hits really hard! The first single Fly Away is fantastic!
Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse
Opeth The Last Will and Testament
Parkway Drive Ire (Deluxe Edition)
Parkway Drive Atlas
Parkway Drive Ire
Parkway Drive Reverence
Parkway Drive Don't Close Your Eyes
Pink Floyd Obscured By Clouds
This album is fantastic and you can see the stepping stones and experimentation that is leading towards the masterpiece of TDSOTM (explicitly with Childhood's End). With many other bands this album would absolutely stand out.
Pure Reason Revolution The Dark Third
A great album which encapsulates the album name. I feel drifting off through the thoughts of sleep and dreaming.
Shawn Lane The Tri-Tone Fascination
Listening to this album whilst reading about his life has me weeping.
Sithu Aye Homebound
Sithu Aye Set Course for Andromeda
Slayer Show No Mercy
These guys made something really special here that helped shaped a genre of music. This album has everything!
Slayer Hell Awaits
From the moment the album starts you know you're in for an experience. The build up, the suspense, you buckle yourself in and for the next 37 minutes you're taken on a ride.
Sleep Token Take Me Back to Eden
sleepmakeswaves It's Here, But I Have No Names For It
Slipknot .5: The Gray Chapter
Slipknot We Are Not Your Kind
Slipknot All Hope Is Gone
Soft Machine The Soft Machine
This album is great, but feel the recording does let it down. The musical talent of the members could shine through a lot more. I have to compare this album to Piper Gates and this doesn't stand up as well to that unfortunately as I believe these guys have some great psychedelic technique and talent.
Stick to Your Guns Diamond
The album has no skips, is exciting and full of energy throughout. Most notable Against Them All and We Still Believe.
Stray From The Path Clockworked
Incredible album to finish with. It will be sad to not get more from them, but a great back catalogue to enjoy.
Tame Impala Lonerism
Terror Keepers of the Faith
Tough guy hardcore at it's best! The album is mixed perfectly with all the noise coming through so well balanced. When you hear them live they kick it up a notch and even after over 20 years they bring the raw energy. More stage dives!
Terror One With The Underdogs
Reviewing this after 20 years of the One With the Underdog seems like cheating as this has had 20 years to burn into my ears. Finally seeing these guys earlier this year for a 20 year show showed they haven't let up in that time. This album is it!
The Acacia Strain Step Into The Light
The Acacia Strain Failure Will Follow
The Acacia Strain releasing a doom metal album that hits hard with resentful, nihilistic despair. The long, slow burn songs really evoke the listener on a journey with the band as they take you with them on a path of desperation. Driving whilst looking out the window the world is colourful but bleak at the same time.rCan't wait to listen to this album dozens more times and let it grow and evolve.
The Chisel What A Fucking Nightmare
This is some good, new age punk rock. Good riffs, punchy vocals and a good time
The Cure Songs of a Lost World
I had seen a lot of build up to this album and thought the band might have had their best days behind them, but this release showcases a beautifully put together album as a whole. The songs all stand out as great pieces with no lulls in the album.
The Moody Blues In Search of the Lost Chord
A great album for my first full Moody Blues experience. Will definitely be listening to more.
The Mothers of Invention Weasels Ripped My Flesh
A great span across this album, but not quite as good as Hot Rats.
The Mothers of Invention Over-Nite Sensation
Definitely not 50/50 about this album. A great album of fusion and humour.
The Mothers of Invention Roxy & Elsewhere
The live shows really convey how funny Zappa is. Be-Bop's intro is incredible.
Underoath They're Only Chasing Safety
3.5 great
Avkrvst The Approbation
Better Lovers Highly Irresponsible
This is a great blip on the radar. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this endeavor before today. I couldn't help but que it up straight away and give it a good spin. A White Horse goes hard!
Bring Me The Horizon POST HUMAN: NeX GEn
The first listen I didn't really like the album, probably from my negative response to the awful cliche lyrics in Kool-Aid. Upon listening a few times I've come to enjoy the album and have gone back for multiple listens. The experimentation and use of nintendocore sounds is weird to hear in a mainstream setting, but has been done without overdoing it. Reiterating the major letdown is the tacky lyrics which have been prevalent in a lot of the recent (post Sempiternal) BMTH music.
Chasing Ghosts (AUS) I Am Jimmy Kyle
I've always enjoyed the lyrics of Jimmy Kyle and the they are on full show on this beautiful album. Some great features from some of my favourite artist (Marcel, Mill, Doyle and Andrew)
CHVRCHES The Bones of What You Believe
Comeback Kid Heavy Steps
The title track goes bloody hard! The rest of the album is good
Daath The Deceivers
Good album, really lifted by Purified by Vengeance which is an incredible track
Doechii Alligator Bites Never Heal
A great mixtape, will be waiting eagerly for her to release an album.
Dream Theater Quarantième: Live à Paris
A huge performance and marathon setlist. Everyone sounds incredible except unfortunately for LaBrie. It sucks his voice has deteriorated, would love to be able to still hear his soaring vocals.
Frank Zappa Waka/Jawaka
A great album. Big Swifty is an interesting, progressing piece with the title track also being fantastic.
Frank Zappa The Grand Wazoo
Great album, much more energy and direction than it's sister album Waka
Frank Zappa Bongo Fury
Frank Zappa Zoot Allures
I'm glad I'm back reviewing these albums as this was a blast to listen to.
Frank Zappa Sleep Dirt
A great instrumental album off the recording sessions for Joe's Garage
Frank Zappa Tinsel Town Rebellion
A great live recording of Zappa and the band. Good to hear Steve Vai recordings too
Franz Ferdinand The Human Fear
Gatecreeper Caught in the Treads
Infant Annihilator Mister Sister Fister: Re-Conception
This is perfect for Friday morning. Slaps hard and gets the stank face going at work.
Jethro Tull Curious Ruminant
Ian Anderson still brings vibrant energy to their 23rd release.
Judas Priest Sin After Sin
A fantastic release full of the high energy you would expect from one of Britain's metal namesakes. I can hear a huge overlap in the sound with Queen just with KK hammering through some heavier shredding, especially in Let us Prey.
Kendrick Lamar Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers
King Crimson Islands
I'm glad I gave this another listen before reviewing. The album is quite lovely, although weaker compared to other KC releases. I hear a good Come Together influence on Ladies of the Road, but made KC. The heavier leaning on jazz this record has excited me, especially with the use of the sax.
Lana Del Rey Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd
A great album and I would definitely love to go down to the taco truck and have VBs with the boys. I also want to know more about this tunnel.
Liquid Tension Experiment Liquid Tension Experiment 3
Opeth Morningrise
Parkway Drive Don't Close Your Eyes (Reissue)
Parkway Drive Darker Still
Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother
The title track is such an epic piece. Fat Old Sun is brilliant. Alan's Breakfast is just background music which takes up too much space on a studio album release. If a song had been placed here in it's place the album could definitely be elevated to classic status.
PinkPantheress Fancy That
This is so much fun, I just wish this was more than 20minutes of my life
Poppy Negative Spaces
Poppy displaying why she's becoming a power house in the genre. Her vocals are incredible!
Pure Reason Revolution Coming Up To Consciousness
This is my first time listing to these guys and I found the album quite enjoyable. The stand out tracks for me were Betrayal and Useless Animal. I'll give their back catalogue a run and perhaps revisit this rating.
Secret World Guilt Is Good
A great EP, I'm excited for the future of these guys.
Spite (USA-NY) The Third Temple
Taylor Swift 1989
Taylor Swift Speak Now
Taylor Swift Fearless
The Mothers of Invention Uncle Meat
Things have started to get interesting in the Frank Zappa back catalogue. I listen to this without the Uncle Meat part 1, some fans may call this blasphemy but I don't mind. RIP the garbage man.
The Mothers of Invention Burnt Weeny Sandwich
A decent overall album but does fall down with the first few covers being more of the fun side, also losing points for originality. The overarching album seems more of a compilation with each song being great but not really contributing to a cohesive album.
The Mothers of Invention Fillmore East – June 1971
Gets props for a great rendition of peaches, but loses for the story of the mud shark...
The Smashing Pumpkins Aghori Mhori Mei
3.0 good
A Day To Remember Bad Vibrations
Coldplay X&Y
Defeated Sanity Chronicles of Lunacy
I'm not really getting the hype, the album is kinda eh for me.
Frank Zappa Studio Tan
Not a whole album, but wasn't meant to be. Great instrumentals.
High Vis Guided Tour
I'll listen to it a few times and enjoy singing it live.
Jethro Tull The Jethro Tull Christmas Album
For a Christmas album this is actually musically fantastic! The moment the flute hits you know you're not going to be hit with lackluster carols. Anderson's flute leads strongly with the Mark Knopfler esc guitar ripping through. The strongest contender (which ironically isn't necessarily a Christmas song) would be Weathercock.
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard FLIGHT b741
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard The Silver Cord
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Changes
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Laminated Denim
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava
Linkin Park From Zero
A great album, Armstrong's vocals are incredibly strong and pack such a punch. I think this album will be played a lot. Definitely consider this vastly different from Chester's work.
Make Them Suffer Make Them Suffer
A great album but it seems stuck between worlds of indecision. The album lacks a holistic cohesion with a lot energy. The vocals and instrumentation are great but would love to see them delve deeper into their metalcore with more breakdowns or solos, rather than leaning so heavily on the clean chorus. The clean vocals are a great accompaniment to the fantastic screamed vocals, they just seem to be used as a safety net, rather than soaring with them.
Opeth Orchid
Pink Floyd The Final Cut
This was the first time I sat down and listened to the album in a full listen and well it sucks a lot compared to any other Pink Floyd release. The general atmosphere of the album was pleasant but it definitely drags on and surprised me that it was 45 minutes long. The songs feel like they would fit in with The Wall, but weren't good enough to make the cut. Some songs feel like they're trying to cash in on the success of previous songs such as Comfortably Numb. The creativity in the instrumentation is definitely lacking across the whole album. The concept of the album is great, some of the lyrics are great, but some feel like they're being read from a biography and are dreary.
RUFUS DU SOL Inhale / Exhale
This was enjoyable, but seems limited to background music with nothing too groundbreaking.
Sleep Token Even in Arcadia
I find the album enjoyable but a let down after Eden. Caramel and a few other songs are quite enjoyable.
Taylor Swift Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift Folklore
The Amity Affliction Not Without My Ghosts
It's good, but doesn't seem to really excite me, especially compared to later releases such as Misery. It just seems to be heavy for the sake of being heavy, and just piling blast beats on blast beats
Vanilla Fudge Vanilla Fudge
I'll preface this by saying it's hard to give an album of covers a high rating as the writing was done by someone else. A single cover on an album is a great addition and can show depth, but maybe this was music back then (something that isn't done too much these days). The direction the Vanilla Fudge had taken with this first release was great and enjoyable. In fact the reason I went and fished this one out for a listen was because it was suggested that there are roots of metal on this record which I can definitely hear but can see how it get lost amongst higher energy releases. The hardest part about the listen was the awful mixing with the keys volume being so jarring and inconsistent.
VOLA Friend of a Phantom
Was a good album but felt the first few songs had the same formula as a lot of their other work.
