5.0 classic
Arstidir Lifsins Aldafǫðr Ok Munka Dróttinn
An epic album, a quintessence of Viking metal how it would be if people got rid of cheesy cliched imagery and silly pseudo-folkish melodies
Selvans Lupercalia
Sinmara Hvísl Stjarnanna

4.5 superb
Havukruunu Uinuos Syömein Sota
the spirit of 90s revived, but with all the contemporary experience.
Kaatayra Toda História pela Frente
Turdus Merula Herbarium
Another hidden gem from the same workshop, an alchemic masterpiece by Swedish black metal first lady, Disa. A perfect blend of fury, despair and melancholy, with traceable yet moderate influences of the French bm scene.

4.0 excellent
Mesarthim The Density Parameter
Mesarthim The Degenerate Era
Misthyrming Söngvar elds og óreiðu
October Falls A Fall of an Epoch
Ymir (FIN) Ymir
Yovel Forthcoming Humanity
unfortunately, this album requires understanding of Greek language, something that makes its beauty and heroic pathos fully available only for a relatively small amount of listeners. but it's definitely a great example of modern RABM

3.5 great
Afsky Ofte Jeg Drømmer Mig Død
Audn Vökudraumsins fangi
Korpblod Hymner
one of the most underrated black metal gems of 00s, this Disa's album doesn't reach the heights of "vardens färd" but remains an iconic example of pagan metal for grown ups, a hypnotizing shamanic trip.
Nadra Form
Obsequiae Aria of Vernal Tombs
Sálarkvöl Harmljóð
A truly great record for demo album, but sometimes great debuts turn out to be well-done
homeworks of mediocrities who have nothing special to say. So let's see.
Verikyyneleet Ilman Kuolemaa

3.0 good
Calvana IÉ…
old-schoolish, harsh, plain yet powerful, a haunting mountain hymn but yes, it would've been twice as good if it was half as long.
Enslaved Utgard
Hollow Woods Endless Trails (demo)
Not perfect from the technical point of view, these banal wind samples (track 3) make me sick, the transitions between fast and slow parts in the 1st track could be more natural and the drums are somehow weak, but the vocals are majestic and the whole atmosphere is EXACTLY what I love about Finnish metal, a furious flight through chtonic chaos and purifying sorrow in the end
Mystras Castles Conquered And Reclaimed
Not great, not terrible, but definitely well-composed
Obsequiae The Palms of Sorrowed Kings
Soyuz Red Blood, White Frost
The concept reminds me of Horn's "Feldpost" but this album is focused on the WW2. These stormy, noisy, passionate covers of two Soviet songs are epic (even despite their infinite length). The rest is nice war metal, not majestic enough to create a soundscape of the great war but acceptable. The horrible accent in spoken parts is kinda annoying.

2.5 average
Avarayr A Symphony Carved in Stone
Marrasmieli Between Land And Sky
Olhava Ladoga
Ysengrin Initiatio

2.0 poor
Burzum Thulêan Mysteries
Drudkh Eastern Frontier in Flames
Falkenbach Asa
late-carrier albums by Vratyas Vakyas: where music meets soap opera
Show Me A Dinosaur Plantgazer
An excellent example of meaningless hipster album hyped because of "provocative" naming

1.5 very poor
Frostnatt NÃ¥r Vinteren Kommer
two riffs and some filters, could be ok for an arcade game soundtrack, unacceptable for listening
Himonas Χειμώνας
Something I would call a failed attempt to write existentialist black metal. The intro is just this average sad melody, the vocals suck and sometimes sound like distorted hip-hop, the synths are boring as hell, and it's a pity because some instrumental parts are deep and catchy.
Immortal Northern Chaos Gods
The only immortal thing about these guys is cheesiness

1.0 awful
Lamp of Murmuur Heir of Ecliptical Romanticism
poser/drama queen metal at its best. the trashy production is the only beautiful thing about this lp
Solstafir Endless Twilight of Codependent Love
wish i could unhear that. why do they even call their dark pop black metal?
