Black Tongue Nadir |
Might go back down to a 3, but after producing pretty shit beatdown deathcore, Black Tongue has produced a somewhat memorable effort on Nadir, incorporating black metal, slam death, and even doom metal riffs into their sound. Yeah, this is worth jamming at least once. |

While their post-Withering to Death works are certainly more varied and engaging, Macabre is an example of classic Dir En Grey expanding their craft with some of the most engaging and catchy songs of their career, despite some not aging as well with time. |

Some of my friends are friends with this band, so while I'm aware there is a point of
contention is the lyrics, I can assure you that they are from an honest place given the
vocalist's real life experiences. That said, I cannot defend anything else about this
record. There are a couple songs I can find enjoyment in, but nothing I would even consider
listening to on my own time. Nothing on this record is
unique or interesting even within its genre. The instrumentation is mediocre if not generic
(though it is performed well enough) and the lyrics could have been written much better than
they are. They range from being somewhat passable to laughably bad and are unfortunately
more on the latter's side of the spectrum. Still, I can't say there's zero potential here.
Maybe they'll grow on the next record, but I can't say this makes me hold my breath. |
