The production is awful and the music itself is strongly influenced by Iron Maiden. But Fates Warning take those influences and kind of do their own thing by infusing more technicality. Just listen to the titeltrack or the instrumental Shadowfax, where Fates Warning do really show their technical abilities. Damnation is an epic ballad that probably suffers the bad sound the most of all the songs on the album. The awesome live version played on Awaken The Guardian- Live shall be proof. Night on Brocken offers a number of exciting tracks like Buried alive, Kiss of death, Misfit and the excellent closing track Soldier boy, but you will also find weaker ones like The calling and S.E.K., that is also an instrumental with beautiful melodies that are disturbed by a free swinging open string. This may happen intenionally, it?s still annoying.rOverall the debut of Fates Warning is great fun to listen to, although it?s not Progressive Metal yet.
