Oh how amazingly beautiful this album was, some cross between Mechina and Enshine. Unfortunately everything went downhill afterwards and there's barely any hope of hearing anything this good from them.

Blows anything by Saor out of the water. Epic, dramatic, melodic and simply bloody brilliant.
Dark Tranquillity We Are the Void
Delain April Rain
Der Weg Einer Freiheit Innern
Disarmonia Mundi The Dormant Stranger
Stellar comeback, never thought they still had it in them. High octane melodeath as usual but
this time packed with top level melodies, best cleans they ever had, crazy lead guitar work and
superb scifi synths, missing for 20 years. Crossroads to Eternity is among the catchiest stuff
ever written! |
DragonForce Ultra Beatdown
Draugnim Verum Malum
Went completely under the radar everywhere as I see but is among the best things 2024 for me. Dark and primal yet melodic and magnificent. Every song is a journey to the sinister corners of man's heart and soul. Be sure to check the lyrics.

Woa, the first song is the best thing here. 2 and 3 are great as well. Overall way better than The
Atlantic. |
Evergrey A Heartless Portrait (The Orphéan Testament)
On par with the excellent Escape of the Phoenix, even better in a way

One of the better post-bm albums out there. There's gotta be some reason the German-speaking scene is so good at this.

Heretoir Nightsphere
Heretoir Solastalgia

If you love Wintersun, Agalloch, Insomnium Ne Obliviscaris or Be'lakor do yourself a favor and check this out IMMEDIATELY. An album of incredible quality out of nowhere with huge 10-15 min coherent songs, quite above-the-average melodies and top-
notch playing. Feat. Daniel Presland from, well, Ne Obliviscaris. All 70 minutes are connected in an uninterrupted flow of music. + Fascination Street production. |

Neurotech Evasive
Nightwish Dark Passion Play
Omnium Gatherum Grey Heavens
Pyramaze Epitaph
As expected, classic late Pyramaze with a touch of melancholy, great vocal lines, subtle keys,
trademark Hansen production and excellent melodies. And the duet with Hayes ia absolutely killer. |

Solution .45 For Aeons Past
Starset Vessels
Thence These stones cry for the earth
This band is so underground that I can't believe it. While this is a stellar almost 1 hour long track featuring among other things a 5 min guitar / hammond / sax solo. And no one knows about it. Shame, really.
Wintersun Wintersun
Wintersun The Forest Seasons
Within Temptation Resist
3.5 great
Alcest Kodama
Alcest Spiritual Instinct
Quite enjoyable, focused, clear and firm. This is basically Kodama without almost all the fluffy shit.
Andy Gillion Neverafter
Andy James C.S.I.L.
Not as thorough as Arrival but still no one does this kind of thing better than Andy

Finally something reasonable from these guys after years of turmoil. Especially glad to see Sadew back.
Bob Katsionis Rest in Keys
Bob Katsionis Prognosis & Synopsis
Borealis Purgatory
Borealis The Offering
One of the last remaining good power metal bands out there. Probably will go down now as well after the departure of their keobyard player, synths and orchestrations played a huge role in their sound.
Catamenia Location:COLD
Chaosbay ASYLUM
Cyhra No Halos In Hell
A bit worse than the debut, quite a few tracks go straight to the trash bin, still there are enough enjoyable songs. Jake needs to introduce more diversity next time though.
Dark Tranquillity Atoma
Dawn of Solace Waves
Yep the Insomnium guitars are quite delicious. However 40 mins runtime really hurts Tuomas' albums.
Mikko's vocals don't always connect with the music, Lars' performance in Choice is much better. |
Dead by April Let the World Know
Dead by April Worlds Collide
Delain We Are The Others
Der Weg Einer Freiheit Stellar
Great album, just a tad below Unstille, first two songs are very cold and mechanical, it gets better after that though. Slightly artificial sound on drums this time around. Idyll is a great bonus final instrumental.
Der Weg Einer Freiheit Noktvrn
Disarmonia Mundi The Isolation Game
Disarmonia Mundi Cold Inferno
Draugnim Vulturine
Duskmourn Of Shadow and Flame
Dynazty The Dark Delight
One of the few solid works in power metal these days. Finally the guys got their shit together and played it right.
Ensiferum Ensiferum
Ensiferum Thalassic
Good album, fireworks kind of riffs are back, Montin is off most of the time but that high pitch in
Crushing Tide and Cold Northland are ace. Bogren is on point as always. Where have the solos gone
though? |
Equilibrium Erdentempel
Eternal Tears of Sorrow Saivon Lapsi
Falkenbach Tiurida
Harakiri for the Sky Maere
I dropped 3 tracks out of 9 (the cover doesn't count obviously) and it feels much better now. Doesn't medicate the mentioned 'unfocusedness' though but still good shit.
In Flames Reroute to Remain
In Flames I, the Mask
Kamelot Haven
Katatonia The Fall of Hearts
Katatonia Sky Void of Stars
Machinae Supremacy Phantom Shadow
Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall We Are The Night
How is it exactly literally no one notices this? Classic heavy metal with some very clever feats
Masterplan Novum Initium
Mechina Acheron
This is the point where Mechina got interesting. Stuff like On the Wings of Nefeli or Ode to the Forgotten Few is gold.
Mechina Siege
Moonsorrow Jumalten Aika
Mors Principium Est Embers of a Dying World
Mors Principium Est Seven
Have to admit, initially I was too harsh with 2.0 on this one. It's actually very decent and
offers some great tracks like Lost In a Starless Aeon or Master of The Dead. Overall not worse
than Embers. Andy's leads are great as ever. The drum sound is a weird choice though. Might be
not their strongest but still way better than what they did on Darkness Invisible. |
Nickelback Feed the Machine
Omnium Gatherum May the Bridges We Burn Light the Way
It's very good, better than Origin, also with better sound. My Pain and Barricades are exemplary OG pieces. Lacks one more song to round it up. They should also stop with stuff like Darkest City, not the first time this kind of track turns out to be the weakest. And how did Vanhala come with an idea he can do good cleans?
Pyramaze Disciples of the Sun
Raintime Psychromatic
Saor Guardians
Shade Empire Zero Nexus
Shade Empire Poetry Of The Ill-Minded
Silent Skies Nectar
Solence Brothers
One of the good pop metal examples with big choruses, competent singing, quite some guitar solos, catchy electronics and even some riffs. Basically a heavier and better version of Normandie.

Ok let's start with 'good', decent Annisokay worship on this one, although definitely hit and miss kind of
Machinae Supremacy Rise of a Digital Nation
Mechina Telesterion
Can't believe I'm saying it but this album is a waste, worthy are only the singles, the rest is
forgettable garbage. Such a damn shame. Things def went wrong after that Compendium wreck.
Don't get it wrong, it's listenable and maybe even good by the overall standard but Mechina can do
so much better. |
Nightland Umbra Astra Luna
A pretty competent sympho album with some solid melodies and well-done arrangements.
Nightwish Endless Forms Most Beautiful
Noumena Anima
Yes it IS muddy, not as abysmal as the previous one but still far from adequate. The album itself is a slight improvement, some very good guitar work here.
Omnium Gatherum The Redshift
Omnium Gatherum Origin
PSOTY Sunless
Sounds a lot like last year's The Ever Living but with more dynamics. Same producer though, so no wonder.

Tides From Nebula Eternal Movement
Brisk, uplifting, airy and with lots of good melodies added. Nice album.
Tides From Nebula From Voodoo to Zen
Quite an enjoyrable electronic post-rock. I wish the album was all done like the first three tracks though.
