Did everyone draw the "crappy review" straw for this record?? Or am I just listening to a different album than everyone else? On the surface, perhaps with only one listen, there's an argument that can be made that it sounds somewhat homogeneous. Closer, more careful listens reveal that the whole record represents SIGNIFICANT STRIDES FORWARD FOR THE BAND'S COMPOSITION STYLE. They have perfected a means of tightly playing beautiful, laid back, west-coast surf rock in a way that is as virtuous and creativity-infused as an endless Paganini violin solo. The end result is an true *album* that is a pleasure to listen to cover-to-cover. The expanded use of pedals results in all sorts of hidden gems when you turn the volume up. But most importantly: every second features a band that is "in the pocket," fully playing together as a group with a common musical vision in mind. It doesn't sound like the beautiful musings of one or two guitarists with cool ideas and a decent rhythm section backing them up. Rather, it sounds like the *absolute pinnacle* of instrumental rock at the turn of the decade.
