Cocaine is dangerous, but you can't say that there wasn't great art that came out of it. Jeez, for an album that the artist had little memory of, you'd think it would be an incoherent mess. rInstead, Station to Station is one of Bowie's most vulnerable and well-crafted albums that is an incredible mix of Krautrock, soul, electronic and funk. |

Gets stuck in my head too much. For how complex this two-piece "epic" is, it's catchy enough that you'd reckon it be some sort of pretentious art pop-goes-medieval project. Makes me think I'm living in London. Anyways, really catchy and yeah, probably perfect, which is too rare for most progressive rock albums, as good as they are. |

Julia Holter Have You In My Wilderness |
One of the sweetest and most dreamy pop albums of the '10s; one that sounds inspired from those waves of dreamy, aesthetic pop albums stemming from post-punk in the '80s and early '90s, but Holter takes her own direction quite well. Never the type of album to top the charts, but one to top one's heart. It's adrift constantly, but rich with melodies and elegance, and a definitive 'grower'. |
Kate Bush Hounds of Love |
This is the best pop album of all time. Is this an over-exaggeration? Probably, but I can't find anything genuinely better than this. There's no other pop album as fascinating, as gorgeous, with production as dynamic and thrilling, with such a unique concept and theme to it, etc. Most songs here are some of the best of all time; that's not an exaggeration. Music is subjective, isn't it? Oh well. Easy A+. |
Kate Bush The Dreaming |
Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly |
This was a grower, which was surprising given that I really found this excellent on first listen. But my trivial complaints kinda faded away. I'm not sure if I like it more than GKMC, but this is a work of art like no other that is so far removed from hip hop's limitations. Undoubtedly one of the very best of the 2010s. |

Basically as great of an '80s pop album as you can get. Well, besides Kate Bush's two masterpieces in the first half of the decade-you can guess which ones, can't you? It takes a while to get into Prince, as he's flamboyantly sexual, freaky, and manic, but good God, this is surreal music that transcends what pop really is. Title track is a masterpiece, of course.rA+ |

Unwound Leaves Turn Inside You |
An ice-cold masterpiece that finds itself on repeat on the darkest, coldest, and most exhausting days of the year. Leaves Turn Inside You is the culmination of everything Unwound had been working up to by the beginning of the 21st century, and if you're gonna make one grand statement before disbanding, then Unwound sure as hell made a lasting impression. This is never going to stand out immediately, but it's a cryptic and ominous work of art that takes a lot of patience and deep listens. A+ |

Boards of Canada Music Has the Right to Children |
IDM has never been my thing, but these Scottish musicians known as Boards of Canada know how to make it interesting. This album explores psychedelic, dreamy, cold and eerie soundscapes with a surprising amount of complexity, while having very memorable moments. It isn't sample-heavy, but when samples are executed, it's really good; see "Happy Cycling", a fantastic closer. Rating: A |

The interplay and bass work is addicting. The lyrics are well-written and I concede on that front despite being staunchly against communism and the rise of communism in all countries, globally. But yeah, the music itself is insane and the band had ridiculously tight chemistry that allowed them to experiment with punk rock and disco, obviously influential, but sounding very fresh. Not every song is a winner, but most are and it doesn't get that old and tiresome, as I had previously charged. |

Almost their best album; somehow, they would surpass this with Apple Venus Volume 1, which takes the best aspects of Skylarking to new extremes and abstractions with better songs. But by this time in the '80s, XTC had never made a better and more consistently fascinating album, and this is loaded with otherworldly melodies and effects. Rating: A. |

This is genuinely a great pop punk/post-hardcore/blah-blah-blah album from the early '00s. Yes, this is slightly pretentious, thanks to Gerard Way, but this is still too energetic and well-crafted to necessarily be bad. MCR's fanbase may have sucked, but this should still be respected. A grower, perhaps, and an album I wish I could like more than I do. When it's slow and melodic, it's very pretty and a hazy type of mellow that reminds me of Blur's later work a lot (see: Come Together & the title track). I do think it gets a bit weaker near the end, and I get the point of making things more experimental and challenging at that point, but it's still not as pleasant. A good, enjoyable record nonetheless. |

It's inconsistent, which isn't really surprising given the eclectic and manic nature of the album. Some songs run for too long, while others are too short, but it's still a pretty good debut album that shows SOAD at their rawest and most authentic. They became more melodic and, well, interesting with their follow-up, but this is a worthwhile debut. B+ |

I don't really like this, but it's okay and doesn't reach many bad territories that would warrant a genuinely bad rating. "Buddy Holly" is still delightful, "Say It Ain't So" is basically their peak at trying to really reach for emotions without sounding bad, "My Name is Jonas" is enjoyable, etc. Lyrics aren't good but it's alright. |
