But nonetheless I feel something should be said to describe the nature of this album and justify the low score. I think its is a mistake to bandy the words experimental and progressive with an album like this. Deciding on two different styles to base each disc is not enough grounds for these tags. For what they have done is effectively nothing new. Each disc sees the band drawing influence (maybe influence isn’t strong enough, try replicating) styles from the base genre of said disc. This ultimately results in its downfall. Disc 1 is within touching distance of dire for the best part, jumping between various metalcore/hardcore (unsure of the differences, if any, between the two) bands with touches of Mastodon and Meshuggah (sans the trade mark Meshuggah dicking around with time signatures) and punkier moments thrown in the mix. Disc 2 saves the album and justifies my purchasing of Precambrian. There are many parts where they do not pull of the mix of post metal with the non-metal instruments associated with post rock. On top of this the clean vocals are irritating and the increasing hardcore moments towards the end of the disc somewhat reduce the score. But nonetheless it is an enjoyable listen, owing to where the band draws direct parallels between well-established post metal bands and consistently brilliant drumming.
