It is a masterpiece, and their best out of all their 1980's albums, however since they're quite underrated it's important to say that if you're trying to get into them, it's not a good place to start (((for their eighties albums))). Their debut "Eden" is better for that. And especially if you're trying to start listening to them as a whole, "Walking Wounded" is way better, and even "Amplified Heart". This record is just filled with satisfying Jangle Pop / "sophisti-Pop" tunes with jazz parts, soul, R&B, contemporary folk, new wave type production reminiscent of Cleaners from Venus and Prefab Sprout. Tracey Thorn's vocals are very dense and powerful. Up there with the greats like Tina Turner. It's a very well produced/mastered record, but compared to their debut "Eden", and the album before this "Baby, the Stars Shine Bright" which were filled with massive real orchestra arrangements and highly skilled jazz musicians, "Idlewild" on the other hand has an amateurish Indie approach, but with even better songwriting. Check out the tracks "Blue Moon Rose", "Tears All Over Town" and "Love Is Here Where I Live". |

An extremely over-hated record. I can see the hatred when anime fandom / "Otaku" shit was new to the internet and seemed really stupid, and this is encapsulates that entire idea in music-form. But nowadays fandom music is getting immense praise like Vylet Pony for the fucking brony fandom. So the state of hatred for fandom music has changed and maybe this will get some more appreciation. It's anime-inspired pop punk with a lot of Chiptune elements. The singer has a noticably autotuned Bowling for Soup/New Found Glory type vocals. I'm a huge Pop Punk fan, not necessarily an anime fan, so I'm impressed by his vocals, songwriting and especially the guitars, which are really heavy and there are plenty of intense solos.
It opens with "Up All Night" which is just about staying up. It has a good structure.
"She's So Kawaii" might be the best track here. The lyrics are cute and the chorus is perfect.
"Cosplay Girlfriend" is a catchy song inspired by the song "Punk Rock Girlfriend" by The Dead Milkmen.
"Lady and the Trap" is about the anime character Bridget from Guilty Gear who is a "trap".
"Expert Mode" is one of their few metal inspired songs, and made specifically for the Guitar Hero DLC library.
"VK Band" is an alright song about wanting to start a Visual-Kei band.
"Super Saiyan" is probably the worst one here. Just because it's forgettable, but still a pleasant pop song.
"Noobslayer" is supposed to be an 80's metal inspired epic about gaming.
"Miku" is pretty catchy and has a good trance-style synth lead.
The closing track "Wide-Eyed Princess" is an insanely beautiful ballad with synthesized string sections and lyrics about loving an anime girl. |

| Really liked this when I first heard it, but after a while it's cliches started to wear. Still better than their contemporaries like Enter Shakiri, Asking Alexandria, Fear and Loathing, Jamies, We came as romans, Drop Dead Gorgeous, the next AA records and the singers next band Of Mice and Men. It had to be said. Anyways, the synths are a nice touch and the clean vocalist/guitarist is the band's main focus. Almost any of these tracks without him on the mic are complete garbage (Kickin Wing, Catfish Soup) You immediately know what you're in for with a Crunkcore intro song, then a really catchy lead single. Then you get the best song of the album "Bro Ashleys Here" which continues the Autotune usage with high quality synths behind melodic to heavy drop d riffs with some pinch harmonics. This track stands out for basically having a Pop Punk chorus when the rest is pure Metalcore. The next track "Shred White & Blue" is about the USA, with some more great Autotuned vocals from the guitarist. Then "Party Foul" is just a fun song with a well written synth lead for the chorus. "What Happens if I Can't Check my Myspace" features a catchy lead riff from the very beginning. The People's Elbow is another fun party song with more amazing autotuned clean vocals. Then, "Kickin' Wing, Animal Doctor" tries going for the party metal sound without any memorable hooks or autotune and it's miserable, however the Spoken Word bridge isn't that bad. "Dr. Shavargo Pt. 3" is one of the best songs, amazing autotune once again but it's followed up by Catfish Soup, the worst track and a good decision to push it to the very end. It utilizes the exact same chord progression as most of the songs with an identical amount of reverb, the synth melodies are trying to be way more epic than they deserve to be leading to a boring instrumental piano outro track with zero payoff. Also for a second the piano is just bluntly ripping off some other pop song I don't know the name of. |

| You could say I don't get "it", but my recommendation to anyone who's like me and just hears a whole lot of empty nonsense, check out his album You Walk Alone. Thats some good shitrReally, if I were to review this album I would start with the guitar. From what I remember, the guitar on the tracklist is static and the single chord played don't change through the whole album. The way the chord is played is really the instrumentation, which doesn't pair well with his vocals in my opinion. Something about his vocals bother me. They're sparse, effortless, inconsistent and detached. Maybe i will get it someday. |
