Perfectly paired with a visualizer, hallucinogens, and a dark room. This album plays with sound and space to build slow burns into gorgeous releases. There is some exquisite, breathless anticipation in some of these tracks, and yet it still manages to work some fantastically dancey grooves in. It tells the story of a breakup, from the gorgeous maximalism of Memory Serves to the desperation of Try It On. It goes from hope and longing to negotiation to ugliness to denial to pleading to threatening to resigned. The middle of the album gets particularly interesting, with Interpol experimenting with moments that struck me with the thought, "This is their Dark Side. This is their Smile."rThis is not your standard Interpol album. Set your expectations aside and give this a fair listen. Instead, we get some bizarre, toothless 80s sci-fi soundtrack marred by an offensive Weeknd feature and an astonishingly bad Pharrell feature. The decent moments have no great moments to balance them out. The closing track is a 10 minute bore that asks for patience it hasn?t earned, then doesn?t deliver on. My disappointment is beyond words.
