| Hank Williams III Ghost to a Ghost / Gutter Town |
Now this is country I can get behind. Remember that in his day Hank Williams was an outlaw
that played music for the masses that was considered backward and unrefined. Same for Jr.
This music carries on that tradition. While Hank III's forays into heavy metal, hellbilly,
countrygore and whatever else you want to call it have been interesting they have mostly
been for laughs. His voice and style are country and embracing it is the best thing for his
music. That does not mean his attitude is gone. This album is true country; at its most
extreme it is hard bluegrass/rock. A few tracks really stand out such as Ridin the Wave and
Don't Ya Wanna. Both of them blend his brand of country with a little punk attitude that is
welcome. Then there's the Devils Movin In which is a beautiful ballad that appears to be
the real Hank for the first time, maybe ever. Outlaw Convention is a fantastic country jam
song much in the vein of his father with a great musical breakdown of aggressive rock and
roll picking. And then you have the second part of the album which is like listening to a
creepy southern swamp horror musical. Best listen to the backhalf all at once. Well done

| What an indictment on the recording, and music industry, and myself that a lifelong country fan had never heard this entire album before today. This one sticks with you. Perfect mix of goofy fun and introspective searing commentary. Prine has a way of disarming the listener just long enough before decimating one with lines like "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes, Jesus Christ died for nothing, I suppose." or "Old people just grow lonesome, waiting for someone to say 'hello in there.'" or "Old man sleeps with his conscience at night,rWhile a young man sleeps with his dreams" and on and on it goes. He is truly a master of the craft. Something about the simplicity, honesty, humor, and depravity mix together to create one of the best albums I have ever heard.r |

Even though he would go on to greater success on the national scene over the next few decades he would never top this album. From front to back this is consistent and high quality. Many of these songs would be hits if they were released on a major label. This one is worth checking out |

One of the best live country albums of all time. From the opener until the close Keen has
you in the palm of his hand. The storytelling in between songs is even better than some of
the music. Every song that is good on his albums is better in this live version. Hearing
these songs live one realizes that Keen is hampered by the recording process and needs to
just let loose on his albums by doing one take. This is truly a must have album for any
Texas Country music fan and an undiscovered gem for anyone willing to take a chance. |

| Great songwriter who displays real creativity in his songcraft. A few songs in the style of the great Marty Robbins. Others display a knack for rhyme and rhythm, such as Bar Light which is a play on a nursery rhyme. Robison is a better writer than singer, but his husky smoked out drawl fits the style. This is a great album with only one or two skips and a couple of legitimately great songs. |

| Bruised Orange is a fantastic album with not a single skippable track. Prine is back in full force with an album brimming with hilarious lines and songs, satirical commentary, and absolutely brutal bars that cut to the bone. The energy is back where it should be with a focus on folk guitars and honest lyrics. This feels much closer to his debut than the previous few albums. It is still lighter in topic, however. It's hard to pick standout tracks as so many make me laugh just thinking about them. So I will just say that If You Don't Want My Love, Bruised Orange, and Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone are more serious music while the rest of the songs are more humorous or downright comedic.rFish And Whistle 2. There She Goes 3. If You Don't Want My Love 4. That's The Way That The World Goes 'Round 5. Bruised Orange (Chain Of Sorrow) 6. Sabu Visits The Twin Cities Alone 7. Aw Heck 8. | John Prine Common Sense |
| Further along in Prine's evolution into a 70's outlaw country sound, Common Sense is a good time and very easy listen. It shows clear influences of Jerry Jeff Walker and Jimmy Buffet and is less Prine's pure essence than his first album. The first half of the album is very strong to outstanding on every track. Even the titles are better than any other country artist. Starting with Forbidden Jimmy the album wanes, however He was in Heaven Before he Died is very good on the back half. It seems the consensus is that this is one of Prine's weakest early albums, however I found it to have at least 6 elite tracks with Prine's honest, satirical, and humorous lyrics cutting through the chaos to deliver some real gems. |

Tremendous album from a great songwriter. I can't call him a singer as well, but his spoken
word/warble has an honesty to it. This album has his best storytelling, with the first
appearance of The Road Goes on Forever which became his most famous work. The Five Pound
Bass is a great joy of simple life song that is dynamic and so much fun. But the
centerpiece of the album for me is Mariano. A tale impoverished difficulty, immigration,
brotherly love, and understanding. A true Texas masterpiece of songwriting. |

| Scene Queen BIMBOCORE VOL. 2 |
This is not as aggressive as Vol I. They have lost most of there metal influences and are
more pop based other than on a few tracks. But their hooks are catchier and melodies
stronger, so depending on what the listener is looking for this could be stronger or weaker
than their first offering. The lyrics are also a bit more generic and sound staler. The
songwriting is overall tighter. The album closes with the two best tracks imo. |

| This album is probably better than Rubberneck in overall song writing and band performance. Lewis's voice is still vibrant and chaotic but is more polished when he needs it to be. The band is just as tight with a very structured and consistent rhythm section. The production is a bit more commercial and has less of a one take sound to it. The lyrical content is still as twisted and strange as it was on Rubberneck which is a consistent theme for Toadies. Standout tracks in my opinion are Push The Hand, Little Sin, Heel, What We Have We Steal, Jigsaw Girl, and Sweetness which is over half of the album. This is possibly one of the last great 90's style hard rock albums from a 90's band before musical tastes forced changes. I highly recommend a listen. |

| I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but this album is very, very good. There are many rsongs that are as good as most of Doolittle. In fact a few surpass almost all of it. This ralbum is not as varied and original as their earlier work and thus will not have nearly the rimpact, but as far as songwriting, hooks, and great melodies this is their best work. The rlyrics are terrible. And the energy level is not at the level it was over 30 years ago, but rthose are only areas that are weaker. |

Overall this is more solid acoustic guitar work and storytelling from Keen. This album adds
a little more electric guitar as well. Feelin Good Again is the standout track and is one
of the very best in his discography. The production of this album is much more modern than
his previous offerings. There is also a little more energy than most of his albums. Keen's
vocals have very clearly improved. He seems much more confident in when and where to place
emphasis than earlier albums. The feeling of shaking off the dust of hard days and looking
forward to the future seems to be a theme, and a good one. |

| Robert Earl Keen Gringo Honeymoon |
| This album is not as consistent as some others in his discography, but has some stellar tracks. Gringo Honeymoon is my personal favorite of his songs and has a perfect marijuana laced Texas love story sound. Dreadful Selfish Crime has all of his hallmark themes of whiskey fueled regretful crime sprees and lost love. Merry Christmas from the Family has become a concert favorite and paints the most accurate Texas Christmas story every told, directly confronting the beautiful smiling family postcards sent yearly. Solid work |
| Santana Shape Shifter |
This is one of the better background/easy listening albums in recent years. Keeps forward
progress while never going so hard as to overshadow anything else going on. The first
portion of the album is heavy on synth and drum tracks in the background and has a jazz
feel. The second half is more live drumming and varied rhythms with a latin/jazz fusion
style. There is only one song (Eres la Luz) that has singing, the rest is acoustic. Closes
with a beautiful piano ballad in, Ah, Sweet Dancer. |

| None of The Bellamy Brothers albums are truly elite as they are so prolific that they often produced more than one album per year and they are not great self editors of their material. However, that does not take away from their unique gift of writing slightly suggestive tongue in cheek hippie country. If that sentence doesn't make you want to take a listen then they are not for you. The album begins with one of their biggest "hits" in If I Say You Have a Beautiful Body, Would You Hold it Against Me and ends with Wet T-Shirt. This should give the listener a good idea of what they are in for. They are at their best when not taking anything too seriously after a smoke sesh. |

| Toadies Play.Rock.Music. |
| This is their best album since reconstituting themselves with a slightly altered lineup. It does not approach the highs of their first two albums but shows that Lewis can still write decent songs with an ear for melody and riffs. The Appeal is his most personal song and represents a very honest side of Toadies that they had not shown before. Rattler's Revival and Summer of the Strange are both twisted sounding songs with their trademark wailing guitar sound. We Burned the City Down is the best pure rocker on the album. |
| Toadies Heretics |
| Despite my reservations about an acoustic album by this seemingly straightforward Texas rock band, they delivered some great tracks. This album shows more depth and nuance than I knew they could deliver, which was a welcome surprise. Lewis's voice is still better used as a blunt instrument and is more suited to ragers, but despite this a few of the tracks are as good as their electrified releases. For Toadies fans only, but absolutely worthwhile if you are one. |
| Toadies Live At Billy Bob's Texas |
I was at the recording of this live CD. They were great as always. This is a truly great
live band. They have settled into more of a traditional Texas rock band over time. A
little more heavily influenced by ZZ Top than the Pixies/grunge sound of their early days.
They recorded a few of these more than once and repeated some at the end to make sure they
got it right. I can honestly say that I think they went with their first take on most if
not all of the recordings. They are really tight as a band. You can tell that they spend
lots of time together.
They played most of their popular songs, although they were lighter on Rubberneck than
usual. I would have preferred a few songs off of Hell Below/Stars Above as well. They did
a strong cover of I Put a Spell on You. This was a good overall mix from all of their
albums.
Todd's voice is still very strong and he can hit most of the notes with his famous growly
scream. He knows the ones that he can't and modulates his tone to compensate very well.
Overall, this is a strong performance from a later in career Toadies. |

| I am going to be honest, this was my idea of a 5 star album when I was 14. I probably listened to it over 100 times in early high school. Comedy never stands the test of time, but this album has fared worse than most. Still, I like. Makes me feel like a dumb kid again. |

| There is nothing essential on this album, unfortunately. Polly Jean is the most aggressive sounding song they have put out since reuniting. There is a decent cover of I Put a Spell on You. The rest of the album is average, but none of it is bad. |
| Toadies The Charmer |
| I have only listened to this all the way through twice and it was certainly better the second time, so maybe it is a grower. I am not impressed with the first 4 songs. The middle of the album is much better with a run of very solid to great songs. Long Time and I Walk a Line stood out to me as the strongest of that section. Normal is a good live song, but seems gratuitous on an album for some reason. I Call Your Name stood out to me as unique in their catalogue as a Toadies take on ZZ Top or something close to that. The rest of the album was ok. This is not peak Toadies, and I don't think anyone expects that anymore. But it is a solid album from an aging band without quite as much passion or energy as they used to have. They are still very good live. |

| Overall this is average singer/songwriter work, but as an initial release from a new artist has a few high points that show potential. The Front Porch Song is a clear direction for the artist that highlights his story telling ability and humor. Young Lovers Waltz also provides a romantic style that he will be able to utilize in the future. |

| This album has a few good to very good songs and the overall energy is good and aggressive, however they really miss Umbarger on bass as she seems to have provided something essential to the sound. The bass is either mixed much lower or is not as impactfully written as it was on their previous releases. The song writing is not as strong either with many more average to below average songs. Overall the album is solid but not special. |
| Toadies Damn You All to Hell |
| This is an interesting EP. Looks can be deceiving as the cover and the songs seem to be at odds. The included songs are easily the calmest and also contain the least lyrical content of any of their releases. The edge and aggression are completely gone on this EP. I found Damn You All to Hell and Sound and Vision to be very solid soft rock style songs, if still not commercial in Toadies tradition. The middle two songs seemed utterly forgettable and unnecessary to me. |
