So I finally decided to give it a try about a month ago... and honestly, I do not see what the hassle is about. Is it different to their previous work? Yes, certainly. Is it more 'atmospheric', with songs that may take a minute or two to start developing? Definitely. Is that a bad thing? Hell no. I feel like this is a first 'concept album' (or as close as Interpol can get to it; Marauder takes the second place) and if you listen to it in its entirety, it works really well. The way the songs are structured and placed makes them even more enjoyable, and the climax feels much more grandiose - think 'Lights', with the simple yet haunting guitar riff repeating throughout the entire song, accompanied by the somewhat distant and dreamy vocals of Paul Banks, and other instruments joining as the song progresses, ending with a wonderful drum pattern. I understand that people may not be fans of the 'quieter'/synth-y sound (think Always Malaise) but I really believe that if they gave this album a chance, it would grow on them.
