1.5 very poor
Sworn In ALL SMILES
This album was goddamn train wreck, from the second I heard "Make It Hurt" live. I knew we were all in for a real special treat once the next couple of songs came out. This album has a great concept behind it that I truly appreciate. It takes a lot of courage to spill out your guts for everyone to see like Tyler Dennen does through out the record (read up on this at the beginning of the "All Smiles" music video), but it's so stringy and dragged out that the record as a whole represents a child's phone toy made out of plastic cups and string. And it really does disappoint, because if the album wasn't mixed like a goddamn Monster Jam, and didn't sound like one 38 minute song (not that there's anything wrong with that. Look up Sleep) with Tyler's horrible new vocal style, it would be a great concept album, much like "The Lovers/The Devil" was. This could tell the story of a broken/dying man, and his trip up and out. But no. It's the same essential lyricism every time. Before writing this, I thought I could show how this album could redeem itself. But no. I realize that to redeem themselves, Tyler needs to get vocal lessons (watch the live video of Sworn In live at The Foundry. Kinda speaks for itself, huh?), and they need to really sit down and write another concept album, because if they could take the quality of "The Death Card", and the pure beautifulness of "The Lovers/The Devil", then I would easily put them back toward the top of my favorites list. But this entire album was just one step forward, and thirteen steps back.
