Overlooked album. It's a shame more people don't know about this band. Found this in a dollar bin,
along with a record of another terribly underrated and criminally obscure band called Dada, and
was immediately impressed by the quality of songwriting and musicianship. Their sound has a nice
balance of pop and grunge. Track recommendations: "Bicycle Song," "Amp," "Nocturnal Autodrive,"
"Medicine" |

An excellent record. I liked Libido Speedway so much I had to order a copy of this. This one
offers a more pop-friendly sound than Libido Speedway, but without compromising the quality of
songwriting. Recommendations: "Electric" and the instrumental "Ve la Luz". Of course, this is so
obscure I don't think you'll be able to find the latter online |

After another listen, I realized I needed to up my rating. This is such a creative record. I find myself returning to a few tracks specifically. "Superstar" in particular is my favorite because it showcases Self's experimentation, their more raw, grunge inspired sound, as well as their softer acoustic sound. "Cannon," "Missed the Friction," and "Mother Nature's Fault," "Borateen," and "Sophomore Jinx" are also quite good. The album has an overall alt-rock/ pop sound, and the lyrics are cynical and sarcastic. This is definitely a worthwhile listen and you should get it if it shows up in a thrift store or something |

Hootie and The Blowfish Fairweather Johnson |
Personally I think the album's better than Cracked Rear View. Firstly, the album has more of a country rock sound than their debut, which gives Fairweather Johnson a bit more personality. In particular, the song "Earth Stopped Cold at Dawn," an acoustic ballad featuring a mandolin and vocal harmonies by Nanci Griffith, is definitely one of the album's highlights. The album has a number of memorable pop rock tunes, including "Tucker's Town," "She Crawls Away," "Old Man & Me," and "Honeyscrew." These are probably the best songs on the album. On the downside, the album suffers somewhat from Darius Rucker's oversinging, which is pretty obvious from the moment the album begins. The album is also quite long, with 14 songs and a 49 minute runtime. I think it would have benefited from simply excluding a couple ballads toward the end. Overall, if you can get past the singing Fairweather Johnson might be worth owning for its better songs. |
