Given that it's Oomori Seiko, it feels somewhat appropriate. I'm still amazed how she managed to keep the same rawness and emotionality of her previous records intact while packaging it in... whatever happened in here. It's weird. It's pop, but you're definitely not going to confuse her with anyone else.Seiko Oomori Tokyo Black HoleSeiko Oomori PinkOne of her earlier efforts, and definitely one of her rawest. This is pretty much just her pouring out all of her emotions and frustrations into her guitar and her singing, with very little way between her and the listener. Consistently crushing and revealing while still being catchy, this is still an incredibly rewarding listen that also works as an intro to her style. The (not exactly high-end) production's also worth noting in how much more personal and intimate it makes the album feel.Shiina Ringo Shouso StripSpangle call Lilli line PURPLESt. Vincent Strange MercyThe Beatles Rubber SoulThe Beatles Abbey Road4.0 excellentAngel Olsen My WomanArctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm NotArctic Monkeys AMCarly Rae Jepsen Tug of WarCarly Rae Jepsen EmotionOne of the most consistently good pop albums I've heard yet; most of the songs would work as singles in their own right, with only one or two tracks I'd consider "weak" and even then they're well above average. The retro vibe works well, without coming off as too cheesy. That said, this doesn't have the overall cohesiveness or personality that I would say makes an all-time great album. She can certainly sing, and she can sound very impressive, but some songs almost sound like there could be more to this. That this sounds like it could reveal more of who exactly "Carly Rae Jepsen" is than it currently does.Carly Rae Jepsen Emotion: Side BMore of the same, but I mean that in the nicest possible way. Very little seems out of place with the minimalist sound, which is surprising because of how the songs still manage to be pretty diverse and unexpectedly complex in style. It's also endlessly replayable because of its short, concise length, and because a good amount of the songs here are pretty catchy. Yakushimaru Etsuko has some of the most unique vocals I've heard anywhere; effortless, breathy, childlike, energetic, and almost ASMR-y all at once. They're on full display here, and they can carry a song even when the composition isn't as tight (which is thankfully rare on this record.)Soutaisei Riron Tensei JingleHas Soutaiseiriron at their most compositionally complex. Having a lot of layered sounds that play against each other as well as they do while still working as a straightforward (for what they are) pop album (if you want it to) is always a treat for me. Its sound definitely stands out in their discography, having a darker and more complex overall feel. This means that it can be much more fun to dig into, given how much detail is packed into pretty much every second on the album. That also means that it may not be as easy to immediately get into as their previous albums. It's the only album from them that I didn't immediately warm to, but now I think it might my favorite.Spangle call Lilli line spangle call lilli lineSpangle call Lilli line nanaeSpangle call Lilli line ghost is deadSt. Vincent Marry MeSt. Vincent ActorSt. Vincent St. VincentThe Beatles Please Please MeThe Beatles The BeatlesThe Beatles Magical Mystery TourThe Beatles Help! The Black Keys BrothersTokyo Jihen AdultTokyo Jihen KyoikuTricot 3Up Dharma Down BipolarUp Dharma Down Capacities3.5 greatBomb the Music Industry! Demi's voice more than makes up for them with enough power, energy, and nuance to compensate for when they would otherwise sound boring, or even dumb. There are some weaker moments, like the duet with Nick Jonas and the too cheesy closer, but it rarely ever became outright bad or boring. Listen to the first track, at least. It's fckin greatKyary Pamyu Pamyu Pikapika FantajinHalf of it's great, arguably matching the highs of her two previous albums. while the other half is just-okay to bad. Mottai Nightland I'd say is one of the giddiest songs in her discography, which is saying a lot. Explorer and Ring a Bell, on the other hand, are some of the worst tracks she's ever done. The good still outweighs the bad, but not by much. I usually just cut out the tracks I don't like when I listen to it, leaving me with a solid six songs (plus intro) of really good, sugary, unhinged J-pop. Lana Del Rey Born to DieLily Allen It's Not Me, It's YouSelena Gomez RevivalSoutaisei Riron SynchroniciteenThe guitar is often interesting, but often I find the songs are pretty much carried by the vocalist. It feels she can make anything she sings seem almost hypnotic in with the breathiness and effortlessness of her singing. Otherwise, the songs can feel repetitive and almost underdone, most notably the opener. When the album tries to have an edgier, harder sound, it can also feel a bit forced. These make the album sound like it could have been cut down a little shorter than it currently is. Still good, rich with standout moments courtesy of the unique vocals. The Black Keys Turn BlueTokyo Jihen SportsTokyo Jihen DaihakkenHas plenty of great tracks; a third of these are among my favorite tracks from the band. At the same time, it feels pretty incohesive as a whole. There are some pretty jarring shifts in tone because of the track order, and it didn't feel like it built up a theme, mood, or anything other than Tokyo Jihen just being Tokyo Jihen. That said, it only rarely became annoying to me as most of the tracks were at least decent. This feels like less than the sum of its parts, which feels like a shame because of how good some of those parts are. This is still one of the albums I most often revisit, or at least check tracks from.2.5 averageMayer Hawthorne Where Does This Door GoPoppy Bubblebath
