Mayhem jumps all over the place wrt its influences and sounds and since Gaga draws a few of these references from her own past but doesn't lock into any one for more than a song or two, it ends up feeling like a step forward rather than a victory lap. Mayhem's throughline is not a sonic or textural one but rather the feeling that taken together, the songs spell out Lady Gaga. So pleasantly surprised! Have been spinning nonstop since Friday.Lana Del Rey ParadiseLocal Natives HummingbirdLorde VirginFYI - did not go into this expecting to like it. But she does something really interesting here. The production alternates between spaciousness and sharpness, coldness - in either case she almost keeps the listener at arm's length. She rarely lets us sit in a particular melody or sound for long enough to be satisfying, either (the vocal chop towards the end of David!). I think this also contributes to this idea of distance between performer and consumer. Really interesting dynamic to set atop lyrics which continue to be honest and pretty frank - as if she's defending herself almost to a point where it becomes aggressive. It reminds me of Yeezus.
