Kendrick Lamar DAMN.
In Kendrick Lamar's new album, DAMN, he tries something new by drifting away from some of his jazz and soul influences in favor of more rough vocal lines and less heavily textured compositions. The result is certainly something new comparatively to some of his older works such as Good Kid Mad City and To Pimp a Butterfly.

The opening track BLOOD. is a great opener with great vocal lines and melodies. It also features a clean and catchy bassline and some alternate options for instrumentation with the introduction of a string instrument such as a violin. Most of the proceeding tracks are above average but definitely not even close to the level of some of his prior works with some tracks being more impressive and some being less. A track deserving mention would be PRIDE. which is definitely a standout, but is followed by HUMBLE. which is a standout for being the worst track on the album.

The album is a step in a new direction, but not a good one. It feels as if it has had much less thought and care put into it. DAMN. is Kendricks attempt to go back in time with hip hop with some new elements.
