I suppose it's easy to write this off as a 5-worthy album because of influence and whatnot, but what I really like about the album is that in almost every aspect it shouldn't work - the unusual distorted viola in the background, the track listing of upbeat, more mellow tunes like "Femme Fatale" directly next to more experimental cuts like "Venus in Furs", the mediocre-at-best vocal performances from Lou Reed and (in particular) Nico - yet it does. With the shocking (arguably provocative) lyricism, unusual stylistic variety of the tracks and odd, distorted production, the album holds together in the weirdest way possible - and still today it sounds as "out-there" as it did in 1967.

Dolly Parton Jolene
The quintessential Dolly album. Released as one of her very first solo efforts, it contains undoubtedly her two biggest tracks ("I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene") which helped launch the start of a huge solo career for Ms. Parton. Even on the album's weaker tracks, Dolly's voice shines through.
Fiona Apple When the Pawn...

Heart Dreamboat Annie
An explosive and highly enjoyable debut. The album's songwriting and lyricism are surprisingly strong here ("Magic Man"), but obviously the main attractions are the intense vocal performances by Ann ("Soul of the Sea") and folk-influenced guitar parts from Nancy ("Crazy on You"). I'm not a fan of the three inclusions of "Dreamboat Annie" (which is itself quite a good song, but does grow a little stale by the third - and ultimately least interesting - reprise) though nevertheless, I think this is Heart's strongest offering, and I suppose it's not too much of a surprise that they never quite managed to recapture what made this album such a success.

EDIT - yeah some of the rapping parts are a bit iffy, but I'd put it slightly above The Electric Lady.
Jewel Pieces of You
In a lot of ways, it's not a good album - it's extremely underproduced, the lyrics are rather shallow and Jewel clearly isn't comfortable in the studio as her vocal performances are incredibly inconsistent, ranging from beautiful ("Angel Standing By") to sounding almost like a poor Cher impersonator ("Who Will SaAave Your Soul"). Still, aside from that there is plenty of enjoyment to be had - the songwriting is strong with memorable, satisfying melodies and great hooks.

The second disc is an overtly long assortment of live tracks which add very little to the album as a whole despite being almost two-thirds of the running time.

Agnetha Faltskog Wrap Your Arms Around Me
An album full of saccharine pop tunes which, despite being enjoyable, do little other than showcase Agnetha's already rather well-known vocal talents.
Agnetha Faltskog A
Not really anything exceptional, but the songs here are enjoyable and innocuous enough (except maybe the Gary Barlow feature), and Agnetha's voice has held up surprisingly well.
Agnetha Faltskog I Stand Alone
It has a slightly different flavour to her previous albums, but it still suffers from the same problems - Agnetha's voice is lovely but she clearly isn't pushing her limits as much as she was when she was in ABBA, the songs are all "nice" or "meh", and it sounds very, very dated.

Dolly Parton Hello, I'm Dolly
The best word I can think of to describe most of Dolly's '60s and '70s albums is "nice", and while that might seem like faint praise, I don't think many of these albums are really worth too much merit when they're less than half an hour long and contain a fair amount of unoriginal material.

I have trouble saying any post-Sugarcubes era Björk album is outright bad, but this one comes closest. Most of the songs are too long, too meandering, too forgettable - even Björk's voice, which is usually so immaculate, sounds unusually hoarse here.

I consider this the first in the "where Tori went wrong" series - it's far too long and many of the tracks are simply too forgettable. While the same could be said for Scarlet's Walk, that album at least had several highlights ("A Sorta Fairytale", "Taxi Ride") and had no truly awful tracks - comparatively, The Beekeeper has no songs which are anything more than "nice", and it's also bogged down by potentially the worst Tori Amos song of all time ("The Power of Orange Knickers").
