One of the best alternative rock albums ever recorded; it bridged the gap between the 90's and the 00's, along with the follow-up Kid A. The themes presented on this album are timeless, and the atmosphere is both original and sublime. This is an album everyone should hear before they die. |

Swans Soundtracks for the Blind |
Equal parts disturbing, ambitious, harrowing, and jaw-dropping, Swans break new ground for themselves as a band and for music in general. Swans present an aural masterpiece of psychological torture that keeps the listener in its firm grasp due to its off the wall, extremely gratifying indulgence. Despite this Swans is not afraid to abuse and punish the listener as well, creating a relationship that makes me hate the album just as much as I love it. In that sense the album is incredibly haunting, and it cast a shadow over the rest of Swans' discography. It is the black sheep album, the elephant in the room that makes talking about their evolution as a band very difficult. Even if this album isn't their best, it's still undeniable how much the album stands out in more ways than one. Its presentation is unshakable, although it might be hard to say it's enjoyable. In the same way that a scary movie is able to entertain, this album is able to entertain. |
