Amon Tobin Fear In A Handful Of Dust
Mmmh...one of the most minimalistic Amon Tobin albums out there; the rythmical aspect that was already not the main focus of ISAM seems long gone now, as most tracks share really similar rythmics and structures overall. The atmospheres are well done as usual and the darker tone that was already envisaged on Dark Jovian finds new layers of expression in here, which is definitely a plus. rOverall a somewhat interesting effort ? Amon Tobin sure pushes himself towards a direction he barely explored before, however there's a noticeable drop in the quality of compositions compared to Foley Room and even ISAM to an extent. Too often the tracks will rely on setting up the smothered, claustrophobic vibe that the album explores through his production effects but will barely stand out for their rythmics or structure.

A really weird album. Dub ? Rock ? Industrial ? The small bits of everything on top of the Yann Tiersen samples makes this debut album hard to describe, despite a consistent songwriting. Via Continum is by far the best song on an album that doesn't look like the rest of their discography.

Frederic Chopin Etudes, Op. 10
It's hard to expect more than exacerbated technical demonstrations from Etudes, given the exercise's nature. However Chopin manages to deliver interesting, complex piano compositions emphasizing on how skilled of a pianist he was. Some of those can even compare to Chopin's major works, such as the third etude, Tristesse. Overall an interesting take on a generally frantic and sterile exercise.

Kashiwa Daisuke 5 Dec.
Kashiwa Daisuke goes 180 degrees after Program Music and dives right back to eletronic music, exploring multiple genres such as abstract hip hop, ambiant, drum 'n' bass, house...when people expected him to follow up on the critically acclaimed Program Music. 5 Dec. lacks the coherency of Kashiwa's previous efforts but still manages to produce a very varied and interesting effort. While a few songs (Silver Moon, About Moonlight) fall into mindless repetition, the album manages to grab the listener's attention all the way through.

Although not all songs benefit from this type of exercise, it makes some of the tracks so much better compared to the original. One of MASSDUCTION's worse assets was it's overproduction and songs like "Slow Disco" or "Fear The Future" fit this minimalistic approach a lot better.rAnd while "Pills" is still terrible we can truly enjoy Clarke's wonderful voice without all the production effects. Thank god for that.

"Vicarious Atonement" is a good opening, altought it seems to wait for an explosion that only ever comes with "Tetragrammaton", which is a 16 minutes-long futile exercice with not much to offer. "Meccamputecture" finds itself ruined by a long central bruitist passage that brings nothing to the composition. rAs a whole, the album is full of good ideas (Vermicide's chorus is great, Day Of The Bahomets has a lot to offer) but the band, as always, is so maximalist in it's approach that the songs end up being so full of anything the band thinks of that they lose their initial value. Amputecture is an album full of good intentions that scraps half of his good ideas and mix them with random noise walls.rEdit : Actually the general impression gets better and better thriught multiple listens. The main flaw of this album remains the fact that it's mostly a copypasta of their previous effort.

The "Chaotic Gardian" theme is insane and baited me into listening to the whole thing.

One thing to take away is that anything Mitsuto Suziki composed in here is hot trash, and that this OST is really hit or miss regarding track quality. The main theme isn't too bad, and some of the battle songs like "Warrior Godess" or "Full Speed Ahead" are quite well made.
Now the issue comes with all the electro-pop/rap/drum'n'bass "experimentations" that sprinkle through the album : they're super generic and painful to listen to. If you can skip those, the OST offers a few memorable songs in the middle of more mundane themes.

The "Chaotic Guardian" theme is absolutely nuts though. You should check it out.

They went from unsufferably catchy to reasonnably bombastic, which is an improvment. A few esthetical mistakes remains to blame but this is a step in the right direction. However the band lost the energy they had on their first effort, which was imo their biggest (and only) quality. A correct effort from a correct band I guess.

Literally impossible to understand, it's one of XXth century's failed attempts to redefine art and music by exploring different musical ways.

This album is incredibly ambitious and provides several interesting ideas spread apart the band's members different compositions (especially Wright and Gilmour's ones), but fails to be a good album as a whole, because it's simply not "good".

Now if you like the record's intellectual demarche, you will consider it as a incredible life changing masterpiece, because you're more attracted to the idea of this album rather than it's actual content. However you do not need to listen to it for this. If my rating was about my feelings when I listen to this, it would be 1,5.

While this band isn't bad, the fact that it relies on the exact same recipe for every single one of their tracks makes it quite limited. It tries to add a lot of different genres to hide the fact that, ultimately, the songwriting is extremely similar from track to track and uses the same tricks and grandiloquent choruses. Pretty disappointing overall.

Disperse Foreword
Uhhhhh...in a way it's not that bad and I like some of the riffs here and there, but god these pop vocals are awful. Not only that but the synths are dreadful aswell, the whole thing sounds like a random Pop/RnB disposable singer decided to get a Prog Metal band to play his compositions.

I don't buy into it.

Disappointing, to say the least. The mixing on that album is sub par and the composition aspect really took a huge nosedive if you compare it to Los Angeles or even Cosmogramma. The sound of the album is drown in reverb and the instrumentation is a lot less inspired than on the previous albums. You can save a few tracks here and there but Flamagra is really below FlyLo's potential.

Bland and repetitive electropop. Not that much to say about it, it's poppy, sounds like summer and parties, and uses cheesy yet catchy lead synths all over the place. Shallow happy partttttttttttty music that you'll like for a time before forgetting about it, unless you've already heard thirty other albums using the same formula.

It reminds me of Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut". Not because this album has anything progressive in it, but because the concept is exactly the same. 1 hour of musical self-therapy, 14,99? for the ones who'd like to assist it. Probably a reedeming exercice for the artist itself, that should have remained secret, as it's a quite terrible attempt as an album.

Nobuo Uematsu Final Fantasy X: Original Soundtrack
A pretty hard OST to rate honestly. Most of the tracks are really forgettable as they're build on a 3 chord loop that goes on for 3 minutes. Whatever Junya Nakano wrote for this is forgettable to the extreme, and Masashi Hamauzu's tracks are certainly not the greatest of his carrier.

Everyone knows about Otherworld, the Megadeth-inspired track, as it is certainly the highlight of the OST along with Zanarkand's beautiful piano theme. Suteki Da Ne is cute if you're not sick of it yet and some of the ambiant tracks like Besaid Island are worth checking. Those are pretty much the songs worth listening to out of the game.

Overall Uematsu's songs are more often than not the redeeming part of FFX's OST, although they're certainly not as strong as some of his previous efforts. Not the most remarkable OST of the series.

Too much sugar, too catchy, too gay. Too much.
Every single second of this record is overproduced to saturation, everything feels plastic.

The only positive point is the energy the singer puts, but even this is wasted by this horrible production. A collection of unbearable earworms.
