Suzanne Vega Songs in Red and Gray
So this album especially holds a very special meaning. You know the type of album that seems to present itself exactly when you need to hear it? This is one of those. Released in 2001 it's an almost autobiographical album which deals with what happens when you go through a major relationship break up, which is apt seeing that Ms.Vega herself was going through the break-up of her marriage to producer Mitchell Froom who in fact produced a number of Ms.Vega's albums himself. Some of songs are almost like reading or listening to somebody's account of what it's actually feels like. Take for example the first song Penitent.......accepting the fact that it's really happened. Widows Walk ( accepting personal responsibility.) I'll Never Be Your Maggie May....no it has nothing to do with the Rod Stewart song! It's a great song about defiance and telling yourself that you'll never be put into the same situation again. My personal favourite Soap And Water ( telling yourself to get off your arse and move on.) But the most telling track would be If I Were A Weapon which shows an almost begrudging respect to her former husband with what comes across as a sort of back-handed compliment.
I first discovered Suzanne Vega in the same way that everyone else did with Luka, but this album was the one that really connected with me and actually prompted me to track down the rest of her back-catalogue which was quite a journey in it's own way,( and a story for another time!)
So this marks my first attempt on this entity known as Sputnik.
I enjoyed it.
