This album has infectious choruses, great vocals and balance between cleans and uncleans, hard-hitting instrumentals and a deadly arsenal of perfectly-placed breakdowns. It's a shame that this hidden gem is so unknown to metalcore fans because it is an unheralded classic for the genre. This EP radiates passion and shows off the group's ability to embrace progressive breakdowns, tempo changes and talented musicianship - all without jeopardizing the flow and melody of their music. A beautiful listening experience, especially for fans of The Afterimage, SHIELDS and Napoleon. Favourite track: I'm AlrightERRA ImpulseForevermore TelosForevermore IntegralHeart in Hand Only MemoriesIn Hearts Wake DivinationPolaris The Guilt & The GriefArguably the best progressive metalcore release of 2016. Balances order with chaos, cleans with uncleans, melody with technicality. A tad more variety between songs and it'd be a solid 5 for me. Favourite track: UnfamiliarStories (AUS) VoidThe Devil Wears Prada Plagues4.0 excellentA Bullet for Pretty Boy Revision: ReviseA Call To Sincerity FoundationsAdept Silence The WorldAsking Alexandria Reckless and RelentlessGroundbreaking and polarizing party metalcore. Derided by metalcore traditionalists and embraced by scene-sters graduating from post-hardcore and looking for new accessible heavy music, Reckless and Relentless must be considered responsible for hailing new legions of fans to metal music. Fave tracks: Dear Insanity, Closure, To The Stage, Morte et DaboAviana PolarizeBrutal, complex and aggressive progressive metalcore. If you like angry vocals, melodic ambiance and crunchy djent waves, this album is for you. FFO: Northlane, Forevermore, and Breakdown of Sanity. Fave tracks: Canvas, Pulsar, The RemedyCircle of Contempt Structures for CreationCircle of Contempt are pioneers of progressive metal and never cease to impress. This album is a well-produced journey of technical mastery. I am consistently blown away by the instrumental abilities of this band, but their screamed vocals and repetitive mono-djenting parts dull the magic from time to time. Nonetheless, this is undoubtedly one of the best progressive metalcore releases of 2016. Favourite track: Ascend From DisruptionColossus Time And EternalConfession The Long Way HomeConstruct Paradise Suspended AnimationConstruct Paradise hold fast to their melodies in this EP and make good use of varied vocal techniques, beautiful guitarwork and scattered symphonic parts, combining for a solid first release. This EP is heavy but not aggressive or intimidating, which results in surprisingly accessible music for the prog-metalcore genre. In spite of all this, several moments feel a tad mundane; something which will likely dissipate as the band matures and refines their sound. Favourite track: Lucid Dream (feat. Chris Wiseman) Dayseeker OriginDisperse Living MirrorsERRA Moments of ClarityDespite the change in unclean vocals, this EP still captures the magic of Erra. Melodic, technical and impassioned progressive metalcore. I'd rate it higher if there were more variety in the delivery and range of the unclean vocals, and if the release had some more creative exploration to it, as they don't stray from their previous sound. Favourite track: Warrior Escape From Echo Base Continents ApartThe first full length from EFEB is a dreamy, fast-paced pull through modern-day progressive metalcore. Laced with beautiful melodies, technical tempo changes and riffs, and consistently pure clean vocals, this record ought to turn the heads of fans of The Afterimage, Napoleon and Periphery. The only aspects holding them from a higher rating are the somewhat monotonous screamed vocals and the occasional djenty muted chug-fests, both of which are excessive at times. Favourite track: Between the ContinentsFor the Fallen Dreams ChangesFor the Fallen Dreams Heavy HeartsIn Hearts Wake EarthwalkerInvent Animate EverchangerA strong, atmospheric release from a developing progressive metalcore group. Underrated and somewhat underused low unclean vocals. I/A are similar, but not superior to Erra, Northlane and Polaris. Fave track: Weakness/ProgressionThe Devil Wears Prada Transit BluesTDWP have, at long last, released a cohesive, interesting, thoughtful album which reveals their stylistic evolution into atmospheric progressive metalcore. The vocals are (finally) on point, the musicianship stronger than ever, and the lyrics resonate with poetic purpose in every track. I haven't had this much fun listening to TDWP since '07. Favourite track: To The Key of Evergreen3.5 greatAdept Death DealersSome of the catchiest and most fun metalcore music of its time. So many breakdowns! Death Dealers is accessible and entertaining - just don't take it too seriously. Fave tracks: No Guts No Glory, At Worlds EndAuras HeliospectrumDeception Of A Ghost Life Right NowMetalcore doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be enjoyable and this album is proof. It's full of energy, great clean and unclean vocals, driving rhythms and fun lyrics. It's also packed with breakdowns, none of which feel out of place. Favourite track: Source FlowERRA DriftForevermore SojournerHundredth RareIn Hearts Wake ArkNorthlane Hollow ExistenceNorthlane MesmerNorthlane will always be confronted with high expectations, given their groundbreaking early releases and polarizing stylistic changes resulting from the adoption of their second lead vocalist. Unfortunately, such changes have come at the expense of technical songwriting, instrumental focus, and straight-up heaviness. All this leaves the musical merits to rest heavily on vocalist Marcus Bridge. Nonetheless, Mesmer is refined, groovy, airy progressive metalcore; their lightest and most accessible release thus far. Fave tracks: Colourwave, Render Obey the Brave Young BloodPeriphery Periphery II: This Time It's PersonalMasterful progressive metal musicianship, and yet despite this, II is still best enjoyed by cherry-picking tracks rather than listening through entirely. Periphery could be considered the gold standard for the prog-metal genre. Fave tracks: Ji, Luck As a Constant, ErisedStick to Your Guns Better Ash Than DustThe Word Alive DeceiverAnother prototypical release from its time: Electronically-infused metalcore/post-hardcore which, although often derided today, represents a symbolic stylistic shift in the scene to include more electronic sounds and effects, clean vocals, breakdowns, etc. Synthcore, anyone? Fave tracks: The Worst In Me, The FountainBreakdown of Sanity CoexistenceThere are a few decent tracks, but for the most part it all blends together and nothing stands out. Sounds unimaginative compared to Perception. Fave tracks: The Grand Delusion, New WorldDayseeker Dreaming Is Sinking /// Waking Is RisingFrom Atlantis Echoes And Answers EPA strong first showing from the group, most notable for its catchy, synth-laden choruses showing off the group's clean vocalist. This EP features talented guest vocalists Landon Tewers and Ryan Neff, but it still falls short creatively and instrumentally. Each track leaves me wishing there was a little something more. Favourite track: Growing, Caving, Searching, Sinking (feat. Ryan Neff of Miss May I)Like Moths to Flames When We Don't ExistA fun, angry album. Most releases of the time and genre don't balance heaviness and accessibility as well as LMTF do here. It drags at times, but should still be considered a staple release for early 2010's metalcore.
