"Chicago" sounds like a rejected B-side off of The Bear, which gives me pause as to whether
this swansong release is purely for contractual obligations to ANTI Records. But seeing as
we haven't heard a peep from them in four years, any sort of official retirement is
appreciated.
EDIT post-release: Yep, very much a did-it-for-the-label kind of release. But at least the
stereogum interview adds useful context to fill where some of the lyrics and vocal
production are lacking |

Described by Mike Shinoda and his bandmates as their most personal album dedicated to a recently
deceased friend, One More Light is unfortunately the band's weakest since 2007 album Minutes to
Midnight.
While it isn't a disjointed, hodgepodge mess of a concept album like MTM, it is a major step down
from their best work, shown on A Thousand Sons, The Hunting Party and Hybrid Theory.
When promoting their lead single "Heavy", the band members repeatedly mentioned a greater focus
on lyrics compared to the instrumentation, in that they focused on developing the lyrics and melodies
first. They even brought in a host of singers, songwriters and producers, largely from the pop scene.
The result is this pop record which could be a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth, as for all the
talk about the personal nature of this record, majority of the tracks appear bland and fail to resonate
beyond a vague surface level, except for the stripped down, largely acoustic title track.
