A brilliant post rock release. Probably my favorite in the genre for 2016. Great melancholic atmosphere accompanied by engaging, varied instrumentation that keeps this from sounding like a typical post rock record. The bass on this is also really good (check ''insomnia'') and serves as one of the main highlights.
Meshuggah The Violent Sleep of Reason
Meshuggah have delivered something that will undoubtedly stand as one of the highlights in their discography. From the start the music is relentless, only briefly pausing to take a breath on the ambient outro during "stifled". A lot of interesting ideas are explored, and the recording/production style give the album a refreshing organic feel. Definitely worth checking out.

Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill
Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill Origins
Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill Homecoming
Animals As Leaders The Madness of Many
I still regard Weightless as their most interesting work but this comes very close. Definitely a lot more carefully composed than the Joy of Motion; the leads are more memorable and each instrument is given opportunity to stand out.

King 810 La Petite Mort or a Conversation With God
This has done wonders for my gym routine. There is a hell of a contrast between songs like "alpha & omega" and "me & maxine", where you see your typical brocore djn djn chugga chugga model suddenly take a turn to spoken word bluesy rock. They make it work, just barely. Definitely worth checking out, for the novelty of it if anything.

3.5 great
417.3 34
Unfortunately they have dropped the post-metal style in favor of a more typical post-rock
approach. This is still good music, they are still showing great musicianship, but can't
help noticing that the uniqueness is no longer there. Check out "52" if you want a good
sample of this album.

Suffocate For Fuck Sake In My Blood
You wouldn't guess by the band name, but these guys write some pretty emotional music. "In my blood" features impressive instrumental work, melancholic atmospheres and considerably unusual vocals for this type of sound. Altogether it makes for a captivating listen, only brought down by the abundance of dialogue sections that tend to overstay their welcome anytime they float by.

2.5 average
Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas Mariner
With songs like 'a greater call' the julie/COL mesh up works well, but with songs like 'chevron' we get Julie's signature out of key shouting while COL desperately try to keep up. It's a bit of a mess, and those parts sound very irritating. Disappointing, but respect for trying something different.

2.0 poor
Burial Young Death/Nightmarket
A lot of sudden shifts during the songs make this a somewhat confusing listen. Especially on night market, it sounds like a collection of different ideas presented as one song. rNow if he took each of those ideas and developed them into individual songs, gave us an album/longer ep, then I would easily bump this up at least 2 points. Because there are great ideas here, they are just not given the attention and structure they deserve.
Distance Dynamis
Big change in sound. Aside from a few interesting moments, this is an unsuccessful experiment. What he did on the outer limits ep was far better.

Nocow Zathdax
Rosetta Quintessential Ephemera

Zomby Ultra
His weakest release to date, and the collaboration with burial was a major let down from both.

1.5 very poor
Burial Subtemple/Beachfires
Never thought I'd say this about Burial's work but this is just boring, uninspired & insignificant. Young Death/Nightmarket was a step in the wrong direction this is a leap off a cliff.
Nocow Ravine
What happened to this guy? This is far to generic and simple to be made by the same artist that made ruins tape.
