Badass proggy/OSDM sound, very fresh and riveting!
Archspire The Lucid Collective
Atheist Unquestionable Presence
ATKA Untitled Album 1
Frantic, breathtaking math/grind metal that sounds like a mad fusion of Gridlink, TDEP, and Psyopus. The technical factor is extremely high but it's also quite melodic and even progressive in a lot of spots. For me this will be one of the most underrated gems in extreme metal. Tons of fun but with a large splash of danger.

Defacement Duality
One of the wildest death metal rides I've taken recently. I hear all sorts of insane influences like Ulcerate, Wormed, Deafheaven, Demilich, etc. It's quite the rollercoaster, especially the 16-minute closer.
Defacement Doomed
Another stellar album from one of the best death metal groups in recent years.
Degial Predator Reign
Deliquesce Saviour / Enslaver
Demoniac (CHL) Nube Negra

Dysphoria Primal Entropy
Entombed Left Hand Path
Faithxtractor Loathing & the Noose
Ferriterium Calvaire
Didn't think I'd be in the minority when I looked this beast of an album up but I love the vocals on display here, and the riffs are insanely potent as well. I also always appreciate black metal with a full, inoffensive mix.

Gigan Multi-Dimensional Fractal-Sorcery...
Gigan Anomalous Abstractigate Infinitessimus

Later-era Death-influenced, but with sprinkles of modern, proggish touches as well that remind me of Blood Incantation or the newest Tomb Mold. What I love about this release is that I can really connect and headbang to it, or just have it take me on a journey.
Hideous Divinity Cobra Verde
Hideous Divinity Adveniens
Good grief! Hideous Divinity have delivered another album chock-full of crushing, supersonic death metal. Adveniens expands upon their sound in the best way possible.
Hideous Divinity Unextinct
Horrendous Ecdysis
Horrendous Anareta
Horrendous Idol
Yet another incredible album from the heroes of death metal. Everything has been taken up several notches. The riffs are more menacing and progressive, the leads and solos are more gorgeous and technical than ever, and there are plenty of surprises to be had. The incorporation of more clean and spoken vocals works perfectly in some parts(the ending of Golgothan Tongues), others not so much. Overall, a fantastic addition to the band's discography.
Inferi (USA) The Path of Apotheosis
Inoculation Actuality
This may end up being an unsung 2025 death metal triumph, but holy hell is this nasty. This is honestly on par with some of the best the genre has put out in recent years .
Job For A Cowboy Sun Eater
Krallice Years Past Matter
Krallice Ygg Huur
Magnetar There Will Be No Peace In My Valley
A stunning and fresh combination of black, death, and heavy metal. Tons of riffs, great drumming, rad vocals, and perfect production.

Mare Cognitum Phobos Monolith

Mastodon Blood Mountain
Mastodon Crack the Skye
Mayhemic Toba
Holy hell this is some intense blackened thrash. Time to party.
Mental Devastation The Delusional Mystery Of The Self Part I
This is one of the most innovative modern thrash bands out there. Sure, you can trace their influences to Coroner, Forbidden, and even Atheist, but they mix those influences in such a fresh and compelling way that it's impossible to write them off as mere copycats.
Mizmor Yodh
This is one of the best albums of 2016 and one of the best doom albums of the decade thus far. Yodh is a monolithic joining of doom, black metal, and harsh noise/drone/feedback madness.
Molested Divinity The Primordial
NAILS Abandon All Life
NAILS You Will Never Be One Of Us
Necromantic Forces Under The Threshold Of Consciousness
Nithing Agonal Hymns
Noisem Cease To Exist
Oathbreaker Maelstrom
Ophidian I Desolate
OWDWYR Receptor
What the effing eff did I just listen to?! This is some sort of insane technical/prog death metal concoction that blew me away. There are breakdowns but this definitely isn't your typical deathcore. Imagine Psyopus, BtBaM, and Meshuggah as starting points, but there are some sick surprises throughout.
Oxygen Destroyer Guardian of the Universe
Pallbearer Heartless
Pallbearer have expanded their sound and have created a masterpiece. They've really mastered the art of giving each song amazing momentum. "A Plea For Understanding" is probably one of the most heartfelt songs I've ever heard.
Palm Reader Beside The Ones We Love
Pillars of Cacophony Paralipomena
Power Trip Manifest Decimation
Putrescent (USA-CA) Darkness Embraced
Putridity Morbid Ataraxia
Ramming Speed Doomed to Destroy, Destined to Die
Remnants of the Fallen All The Wounded And Broken
I have no idea how this isn't more well-known because this is some of the best metalcore I've ever heard. Insane solos, highly technical riffing and drumming, huge emotional moments, this album has all the good stuff in spades with absolutely no redundant chugging; the rare breakdowns are very deliberately placed and contribute to the songs in the best way. The lyrics and vocals patterns are pretty great too.
Revocation Revocation
Ripper (CL) Experiment of Existence
Sacrifizer Le Diamant de Lucifer
Fantastic black/thrash/speed metal with epic riffs and high-quality songwriting.

I will never get tired of all those haunting guitar leads.
Serocs The Phobos / Deimos Suite
Setentia Darkness Transcend
Shrine of Skulls Megalith of Madness
I am absolutely shocked that this incredible 2024 release hasn't garnered more attention. Ripping, furious, and fresh, Shrine of Skulls have created a hell of a fun death metal ride. I can't imagine any fan of the genre not thoroughly enjoying this one!
Skeletal Remains The Entombment Of Chaos
Extremely well done OSDM. No murky production, no pretension, only brutal riffing, ripping solos and highly enjoyable songwriting. You'll headbang, you'll piss your pants, and you'll hit play again when this album is over, guaranteed.
Skeletal Remains Fragments Of The Ageless
Their heaviest, most compelling album yet. Any fan of OSDM or death metal in general is sure to enjoy this classic yet fresh take on the genre.
Spawn of Possession Incurso
Sumerlands Dreamkiller
Definitely one of the best traditional heavy metal releases of the modern age. There is a lot of diversity among the tracks; a few of them are fast-paced and lethal and some are slower and more atmospheric. Overall, the whole album rocks just as much as their debut and has the same sorrowful, dark touches in the riffing and lyrics.
The Arusha Accord The Echo Verses
The Black Dahlia Murder Deflorate
The Black Dahlia Murder Ritual
The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
The Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works
The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer
The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
The Secret Agnus Dei
Tomb Mold The Enduring Spirit
I've always liked Tomb Mold, but to me they always lacked emotional weight in their riffing and general delivery. This album is a huge improvement on that front. The riffs are more emotional, proggy and melodic while still bringing plenty of their trademark cavernous brutality to the table.
Type: Armor Unit Revolutions in Saecula
For some reason Sput wouldn't let me upload the album cover, but DO NOT PASS THIS UP if you like Discordance Axis, Gridlink, etc. Insane, balls-to-the-wall, interesting spacegrind.

Vulture (DE) The Guillotine
Vulture (DE) Ghastly Waves & Battered Graves
Vulture (DE) Dealin' Death
Vulture (DE) Sentinels
Vulture does it again...! Sentinels is a fantastic, aggressive speed/thrash album that blends all the best characteristics of their previous works while sprinkling in a couple surprises here and there. Vulture might be influenced by bands much older than themselves, but they make the style feel fresh and authentic.
Warp Chamber Implements of Excruciation
Wharflurch Psychedelic Realms ov Hell
Wormed Exodromos
Wormed Krighsu
Xoth Interdimensional Invocations
This is everything I want from a death metal album in today's scene. Soaring and ripping leads/solos, spastic but
well-structured songs, and a diverse set of influences ranging from black metal to heavy metal have made this
one of my favorite albums of the year! |

This album completely rips, bringing dense atmosphere, speedy epic death metal, and insane, haunting vocals together in a whirlwind of cosmic chaos. Every track has a plethora of truly jaw-dropping moments, but the album suffers a bit from poor pacing and an experiment or two that don't work as well as they could have.

Full of Hell just won't stop. The entire album is just dripping with malice, focused into a truly unsettling grind/death metal whirlwind. Harsh noise isn't usually my bag, but the group uses it pretty tastefully and it compliments the "brain-melting" vibe they have going on.

Uttertomb Nebulas Of Self-Desecration
Vaelmyst Secrypts of the Egochasm

As I Lay Dying Through Storms Ahead
Constant band-related drama aside, I thought this was a well-done metalcore record. There's nothing groundbreaking on display, but it has a lot of energy and I think it's refreshing to hear a more "classic" sound amid all the nu-core coming out these days.

Wild, experimental, technical death metal. Really cool to listen to and dissect, but not very accessible or headbangable. If they were to mix in a few catchy riffs and make things flow a bit better they'd have something special on their hands.

Mastodon Hushed and Grim
As someone who has liked, but not loved Mastodon's past few albums, this rules. If you're looking for another Blood Mountain you won't find it here, but this is the best album they've put out since Crack the Skye. Also, not sure why people are complaining so vehemently about the production. It's not the best I've ever heard, but it's not offensive at all and it gets the job done. Only thing I noticed is that the drums don't sound quite as full and powerful as they usually do. 3.7/5

This is really damn good. It's dissonant but melodic at the same time. I like my death metal to be a little bit more "fun" though, if you catch my drift. Non-sexually.
Unbirth Asomatous Besmirchment
Unbirth are back, and they've created another awesome slab of tech/brutal death metal. My only complaint is that the production is a bit rough this time around, but the nasty riffs and expert songwriting are still in full swing.

Vexovoid Call of the Starforger

This is some pretty out-there death metal. Some of the riffs are more traditional melo/tech death metal but a serious affinity for atmospheric breaks and sudden shifts in direction make this an exciting, if disorienting experience. Some of the transitions are astounding but others are a bit too jarring for my tastes. It's definitely worth a listen if you like Fallujah, Virvum, or any of that other spacey tech death metal stuff.
Windhand Soma
Wode Uncrossing The Keys
Leans even more into the blackened/rock/metal side of their sound than their previous works,
but there's some ferocity on display as well. If you dig Tribulation, Cloak or Nite, you'll
love this. |

Chuggy hardcore with a few interesting Danza-esque moments. The lyrics are lackluster and they rely way too heavily on the aforementioned chugging.
Bedsore Hypnagogic Hallucinations
Good, but not great psychedelic old-school death metal. While there are certainly some kickass moments, the album is highly inconsistent and many of the slower, creepier parts are simply boring.

END (USA-NJ) The Sin of Human Frailty
Super heavy hardcore with a bit of mathcore to make things extra chaotic. Nothing new or unique, but it is certainly enjoyable even though the production holds it back.
Esoctrilihum Eternity Of Shaog
Very vicious and fast-paced death metal with very odd, anxiety-inducing violins and other instruments thrown in. Unfortunately the constant inclusion of these into practically every section, along with some odd mixing choices causes the guitars to lose a lot of their power. Still worth a listen by anyone into Abyssal, Wormlust, and weird/dissonant black/death metal.
Fallujah The Flesh Prevails
Fallujah Undying Light
Fallujah The Flesh Prevails (Remixed & Remastered)
I was so excited when I saw the news that this was being remixed/remastered. Unfortunately, it's only slightly less offensive sonically than the original. The snare and toms still sound horrible, but everything else sounds decent enough I suppose. Maybe in another ten years we'll get a perfected version.
First Fragment Gloire Eternelle
Decently written and there is some AMAZING stuff here, but funnily enough one factor drags this down into the mud: way too many squealing pinch harmonics. It sounds like one thousand dogs are chewing on one thousand squeaky toys. Would have easily been a 4-4.5 if they had cut out 90% of them. In 'El is definitely the best track.

Vhol Deeper than Sky
Windhand Grief's Infernal Flower
Wretched (USA-NC) Decay
A very strange return after 10+ years. There are some great riffs and leadwork, but the pacing is very slow. It also kind of takes a nosedive halfway through, with two weak tracks leading up to a lackluster 16 minute instrumental piece. Worth a listen, and works in the background.
