A major step away from his previous work with boy band One Direction, Mind of Mine hues closer to the beats and atmosphere based music of the likes of Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. Zayn knows precisely when to sing at full strength, and also when to pull back- creating a vocally versatile album. It is a cohesive body of work that lacks filler tracks; each song adds its own unique flavor to the record. Malik even includes "Intermission: Flower"- a song sung in his native language, Urdu, in its entirety. The sheer impact of such an inclusion should not be overlooked. Zayn's complex identity as a biracial British-Pakistani Muslim, along with his reserved and soft-spoken nature, accounts for the intrigue and mystique surrounding him as an artist.
