Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly
Once in a while, an album comes along that shakes the core of not only rap as a genre, but each rap fan that takes the time to listen and understand. The black struggle to survive in the tumultuous racial climate of America has bubbled to the surface in this decade, and To Pimp a Butterfly will someday be looked back on as a masterpiece of black sound in 2015. Beyond the social connotations and musical innovations from the jazz and funk infused sound that Kendrick effortlessly tackles, the album makes important strides in conveyance of emotion through lyric and instrumental. To any doubter, one only need to look to U - perhaps the most painfully accurate depiction of desperate depression and self-hatred ever to come from the genre.

Christine and the Queens Christine and the Queens
Where modern queer pop energy meets the quaint darkness of a Parisian alley, there lies the sound and soul of Christine & the Queens. From the mission statement declared shortly into iT ("I'm a man now", she smiles with a tone of confidence), Christine finds solace in prying her soul asunder and allowing the listener to piece it back together.

Deafheaven New Bermuda
After drawing a wider audience with the superb Sunbather, Deafheaven takes the listener on a sharp rollercoaster dive into the depths of black emotion with New Bermuda. Cutting through the darkness are beautiful major-key guitar melodies, expertly placed to feel like coming up for a breath before plunging below violent waves once more.

Majical Cloudz Are You Alone?
Building on the excellent foundation laid by their debut Impersonator, the best moments of Are You Alone find Majical Cloudz reaching a musical bliss in a minimalist storm. Standouts like Downtown say more in their silence and blunt vocal delivery than many have before them and will in their wake.

Empress Of Me
From the sheer synth stabs of Kitty Kat to the conspicuously off-key pre-chorus of Standard, Me is a case study in a brilliant musician holding a candle to the wax structure of modern pop music. The beauty of Empress Of lies in her candid parlance of emotion through a perfectly imperfect platform.

A solid, if occasionally homogenous album from an exciting producer with one of the most unique sounds in modern electronic music. Songs like Enveloped find Arca at his best - dismantling the skeletons of modern hip-hop and electronic beat structures to create a wobbling, disconcerting, and, most of all, beautiful piece of art.

Mac Miller GO:OD AM
That's not a yawn you're hearing - that's the sound of thousands of hip-hop fans reluctantly leaning forward in their seats. After a rocky start as the face of early 2010s frat rap, Mac Miller became the most surprisingly intriguing name in rap after the critical success of Watching Movies With The Sound Off. While nothing on GO:OD AM quite reaches the heights of its predecessor, it stands as a strong opening statement as Mac enters the major label phase of his career.
MGMT Congratulations
Neon Indian Vega Intl. Night School
By the guiding light of glowing signs, Neon Indian embraces the kitsch of 80s electronic pop and melds it with his own signature, queasy production style. The result is an undulating, constantly morphing work. While individual songs (save for Annie and C'est La Vie!) may blend together into the bright pink soup, the album as a whole is an impressively cohesive and infectiously fun listen.

DRAM Gahdamn!
For every way that this EP fails to find itself a true follow-up to Cha Cha, it manages to paint a new path for D.R.A.M. as an emerging and increasingly interesting artist. In fact, with songs like Signals (Throw It Around) and Wit The Shits stretching in completely opposite directions, it seems that this was D.R.A.M.'s plan all along. And if his goal is to keep us engaged as he finds his sound for his debut album, it's certainly working.

Rustie EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE
After Rustie's first two commercial releases, EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE finds the producer abandoning the build-drop structures of his genre for visceral and almost ambient chords peppered with the kind of jittery basslines that we've come to know and love from him. Unfortunately, the experiment shows just how limited Rustie's signature sound is when stretched into a cohesive but repetitive longform.

Jay Rock 90059
Jay Rock is by no means a bad rapper; similarly, 90095 is by no means a bad album. That said, there is no room for "not bad" on Top Dawg Entertainment. Alongside personas as vivid as Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q as well as the rising stars of Isaiah Rashad, Ab-Soul and SZA, Jay Rock barely stacks up as acceptable. Unfortunately, that's not quite enough for him to justify his spot on the track-for-track best label in the modern rap game.
Jay-Z Kingdom Come
Jay-Z Magna Carta... Holy Grail
Jeezy Church In These Streets
Jeezy has come a long way from his younger days, and the Snowman is still in rare form in terms of performance and his distinctive vocal style. However, Church In These Streets sticks to long-trodden paths and beats ranging from generic to forgettable. In order to maintain relevancy in an ever-competitive rap game, he'll have to do a bit more going forward to stand out from the younger and more distinguishable crowd.

Fall Out Boy Make America Psycho Again
Any fan of Fall Out Boy remembers the intense disappointment of the post-hiatus release of Save Rock and Roll. If they stuck around, they no doubt felt the sting of early 2015's American Beauty/American Psycho as the band they once loved changed gears to head directly toward... GarageBand. At least with those releases, there was still a faint inkling of the soul of the band that was once known. Here, the only thing to tie these songs to Fall Out Boy is the lifeless voice of Patrick. There's absolutely no reason to struggle through this album - either as a hip-hop fan or a Fall Out Boy fan. This collection is little more than the flaked ashes of the flaming pile of shit that is Fall Out Boy's latter releases for the most part.
