| Josh Homme's has a lovely voice. The Queens of the Stone Age were a lovely band... Years ago... Like almost 2 decades earlier. So, always hopeful that the next QOTSA LP will be a crown jewel worthy of my praise, thrilling enough to be entertaining, full of Homme's crooning and hushed, cool cat vibe... Harmony rich? Reference the track he co-penned for the film, End of Watch... ?Nobody to Love.? Frick man... Why? Why can't this band pull off another ?Rated R?? Or, ?Songs For The Deaf?? Or, S/T debut? Well, hmm? That?s a good question. QOTSA on ?Villains? remembers to have plenty of punchy power chords, propulsive drumming, trademark harmony, and, an air of condescension à la ?Joshy? Hommes. So, while it may not resurrect entirely the ?sound? that brought them so much praise? ?Villains? is not completely bereft of rock value. My suggestion: Given their mainstream popularity, local public libraries are well stocked. So are the various streaming services. Frankly, I?d wait a bit and buy this one used or marked down. Oh, and before I forget? Track 6, ?Un-reborn Again? with its obvious nod to T-Rex is about as obnoxious a cut as they come. Hint to Joshy? Keep ?em simple and stripped down. NYC chaos, song styling is irritating! ?Nuff said, yo. |
