Megaherz 5 |
In my opinion the absolute highlight of Megaherz's long career. Everything comes together on this album - a perfect marriage of Megaherz's early, rap metal-leaning influences, heavy NDH elements, ultra fat, bouncy nu metal-influenced riffs and X-Ti's ear for melody. Add to that Mathias Elsholz, whose vocal skills blow both of the other Megaherz singers out of the water, managing both beautiful, melodic clean singing as well as truly monstrous growls. It is a real shame this particular lineup of Megaherz only lasted for such a short a time. Standout tracks: Dein Herz schlägt, Ja genau, Eigentlich, Zeig mir dein Gesicht |

Megaherz Heuchler |
I remember waiting for this album with bated breath and being very relieved to find it a very good album indeed. On Heuchler Megaherz showed that they could take whatever internal problems the band had and use them as fuel for change and evolution - compared to earlier albums Heuchler takes a confident step in a darker direction both musically and lyrically and makes space for the new singer Lex Wohnhaas to fit right in, tweaking their output just enough so that the band sounds different, but still like Megaherz. For an album with a new singer, Heuchler showed a ton of promise - too bad this newest incarnation of the band hasn't been able to meet the expectations set by Heuchler on their last few albums. Standout tracks: Heuchler, Ebenbild, Schau in mein Herz |
Megaherz Götterdämmerung |
Megaherz Erdwärts |
After the disappointing Zombieland Megaherz shows it can put together something good again by condensing their output into a more palatable EP format. Four solid new tracks showcase both the heavier and more melodic sides of the band very well, and especially Einsam is a successful attempt at masking Lex's lack of emotional range by pairing him with a female voice. Could be better, however - the rerecording of Teufel is alright, but the monotone and lifeless new version Jordan only makes the differences between Alexx and Lex more obvious. This would've been a better EP without the rerecordings, to be honest. I criticize Lex a lot in my soundoffs of the newer Megaherz albums, and while I think he's actually a good singer and a worthy frontman for Megaherz, I feel he's often being used in the wrong way. Standout tracks: Any of the new songs, really! |

Megaherz Zombieland |
Zombieland is not a terrible album, but it's nowhere near as good as it should be, coming from such a veteran band. It's got more of a mainstream angle to it than probably ever before, but there's nothing inherently wrong with that - the problem is that the band seems to have forgotten what Lex's and the band's own strengths are, which results in most songs just not working as well as probably intended (see: Für immer). The kind of stuffy and mushy mixing doesn't exactly help to bring anything out in a meaningful way. This is showcased - in the worst possible way - by the new recording of Hurra - Wir leben noch, which seems to have lost all personality and color it used to have nearly two decades ago on Himmelfahrt. Sure, there are a couple of times when it works, like on the huge Himmelsstürmer which successfully manages to marry driving, mechanical rhythms, airy melodies and a big ass chorus with Lex's vocal range. Standout tracks: Himmelsstürmer, Schwarzer Engel |
Northern Lite Ten |
Northern Lite Shuffle Play |
Shuffle Play continues the string of unfortunately uninspired and samey albums from Northern Lite. There are a couple of great tunes here like on any NL album, especially the opener and the excellent Bonnie Billy cover I See a Darkness, but it just feels like this band is in dire need of a break between albums. Standout tracks: Staring at the Sun, I See a Darkness |
