Yes, Garrels uses a wide array of different instruments but he still confines himself to the traditional musical keys of G,E,C, and D for the entire album. The slow melodic pace of every song is exactly the same besides Leviathan which has an interesting drum beat only to be drowned in slow one chord guitar strokes. Home's closest comparison would be Ys by Joanna Newsom. Josh Garrels will make your ears bleed on Colors. Josh Garrels has a distinct annoying feature in some songs where he falsettos into screechy chalk board sound waves, causing the audience to cringe in agony. Garrels falls short on his lyrics with the music. Every song is about a child returning to his father. As a Christian we would understand this as leaving faith and then returning back to our Lord. So I will ask you as a listener is an entire album interesting if every song is about the same thing and the music is all the same? Overall if Josh Garrels wants to be appreciated as an experimental alternative artist his music needs a lot more musical depth and quality.
