As a drummer, the drum work on the album is absolutely mindblowing but so so subdued at the same time. The music has a near-paralytic calming effect but is never close to being boring. A truly remarkable record. Their sound is a bit different and perhaps a bit more directed, but it's growing on me very quickly. Terror Back is the best song on the album imo. A bit more tech than Blakfish, but still has great melodies and riffs. &U&I Light BearerFantastic. Took a number of listens to get used to it, but after the 4th listen through, I've been really digging it. It's definitely a new sound, far from Blakfish and even somewhat distant from Kill the Man that Shot that Man, but it's a good. Highly recommend. As for the rest...it's not that the album does any one thing particularly well, but it's the balance of it that comes together and forms a sledgehammer to the face. There's something about the album I can't really wrap my head around, but it's particularly powerful. Additionally, the drummer's snare work is brilliant. His percussion work manages to be relatively understated and works well with the songs, but for the drummer with a well tuned ear it's also technically satisfying. I could go without the clean vocals, they don't really add much here and sound out of place. Songs aren't identical sounding so it does get acceptable replay value. It obviously doesn?t benefit from the automatic +1.5 rating point inflation given to any random abstract atmospheric noise trash metal album that comes on the Sputnik docket.Radiohead The King of LimbsSirens and Sailors Still BreathingLots of energy, very punchy and solid all around...good drum work especially, but brings nothing new to the table. It's a frustrating "progression" as there are little slivers of awesomeness to be found on the album, but they're usually drowned by drawn out and mundane verses. A lot more electronic stuff to be found on the album, and while it adds on certain tracks (like Odessa), often times it gets stretched out for too long and gets annoying. For example on the opener track, from 1:50 to 2:45, what is otherwise an awesome track gets a huge chunk of boring, uninspired garbage thrown in the middle of it. rIt feels like they had some moments of inspiration and strung them together with useless filler. A mostly boring and disappointing culmination in what was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. rGiraffes? Giraffes! Seriously, after such a hiatus I was expecting something momentous. It could be worse, it's an okay album for what it's worth...but at the end of the day it's not worth much.
