28 years since their inception and Amorphis simply decides to drop quite possibly the best and most complete album of their entiere career. Folk, orchestral elements and progressive metal blend together into a breathtaking mix. The vocals, the instrumentalization, the production values are all fantastic. Seriously how many bands can make such haunting and quality music this late in their run? These Finns are easily the most undervalued masters of the metal genre.

To call this an improvement over their debut album is an understatement. Finished with the Dogs is one of the rawest, most intense and ferocious records ever to came out the german thrash scene. Breakneck tempos, killer riffs, short but great solos, machine-gun like drumming and Sabina Classen's amazing vocal performace all make it into one hell of an album. A real gem.

Quite possibly the apex of modern Napalm Death. Nearly every song is a well balanced mixture of brutal grinding and groovy death metal riffs. The production and Barney Greenway's growling is also top notch. 14 songs and 54 minutes may seem a bit too much but the songs contain enough hooks, energy and variety to keep up the relentless pace.

Since the mid-2000's Paradise Lost has been going back to their musical past step by step, album by album. With The Plague Within the circle has been closed: Here's an album that combines the death/doom of the early years with the gothic sound of Icon/Draconian and the more eclectic approach of later year albums like In Requiem. The result is an absolute masterpiece which represents the sound of Paradise Lost at it's fullest and most complete.

Channel Zero Unsafe
The major turning point in Channel Zero's career. This was the album when they went from solid Bay Area-thrash emulators to one of the grooviest bands of the 90's. After two subpar albums COB rediscovers their roots and deliver their best and most consistent album since Hate Crew Deathroll. Epic melodies, good vocals, strong and powerful riffs all combined into songs that fill you with energy rather than boredom.
Chris Cornell Euphoria Morning
Chris Poland Chasing the Sun
Chris Poland's second solo album puts less focus on heaviness and more on diversive melodies, mood and jazz. The result is an eclectic, exciting and fantastic record with incredible six-string work from the man himself. Every note is bended with soul and care.

Persuader The Hunter
Imagine a cross between classic Iron Maiden, early Blind Guardian and Iced Earth then you will get a clearer picture of what Persuader sounds like and just how much ass this band kicks.
Persuader The Fiction Maze
Bit surprised the overall rating this album has, I think this is a great power metal record and every bit as good as Persuader's other albums. It has some of the more melodic vibes of When Eden Burns but harkens back much more to the rough-edged Evolution Purgatory. The songwriting, production and musicianship are top notch as usual.

This release is a compilation album consisting from the band's previous 3 EP's and two new songs recorded just for this album. If you're not familiar with Tarot's music, imagine the highly melodic, keyboard-driven progressive rock of the 70's with some folk/Celtic influences and you're getting close. Ridiculously retro-sounding and accessible.

The first time in nearly 15 years The Crown releases an album that actually sounds like The Crown. Intense, energetic balls-to-the-wall thrash-influenced melo-death with crushing riffs and great production. Sure it's not very original but it's so damn good to once again hear that sonic ferocity that few contemporary metal band could match up to.

By infusing the groovy, fuzzy desert rock with some 70's influences mostly present during the faster, more upbeat songs, 1000Mods manages to spice up their formula just enough to not come off as repetitious or overfamiliar. Also they put a deeper focus of texture with a focus on bluesy clean guitar passages and well-timed tempo changes. The subtle build-up and Kyuss-like feel of the closing track "Into the Spell" is a major highlight.

Brant Bjork Keep Your Cool
Brant Bjork Gods And Goddesses
Brant Bjork Saved By Magic
A 80+ minute celebration of desert rock, Saved by Magic is easily one of the major highlights of Brant Bjork solo career with an excellent balance between fist-pumping hard rock tracks and the relaxed songs with some hypnotic instrumentals thrown into the mix. The super-psychedelic cover of Cream's famous Sunshine of Your Love is also a winner.

Channel Zero Stigmatized for Life
Channel Zero Kill All Kings
After the mixed bag that was Feed 'Em With A Brick, Channel Zero makes their true return with Kill All Kings, bringing out the thrashy, heavy grooves of their early albums, infusing them with more melodies. The influence of Pantera and Machine Head are obvious, but the songwriting is strong, consistent and the production is fantastic. As good as groove metal can get in the 2010's.

Dead Meadow The Nothing They Need
Dead Meadow will probably never return to the harsh, cacophonic stoner psychedelica of their early records, but that doesn't means that their current material is disposable. It's calmer, more mellow and blues-like but still layered, rough around the edges and engaging. A true summer album in it's vibe and sound.

Evile Enter the Grave
Evile Five Serpent's Teeth
Evile Hell Unleashed
To think that I was getting out of high school the last time Evile dropped an album is making my head spin...long time since I've heard them but this is easily among their best. Furious fast paced riffs with some OSDM and Eastern touches, thight pace, vibrant leads and Ol Drake giving a suprisingly good vocal performance. Violent, neckbreaking thrash done right.
Exhorder The Law
Exhorder Mourn the Southern Skies
Exmortus In Hatred's Flame
Taking the fast and relentless nature of thrash and combining them with death metal style drumming, growling vocals, neo-classical shredding (sometimes not just in solos but rhythm guitars as well) Exmortus creates a jaw-droppingly over-the-top style that may be too much for some but personally I enjoyed every minute of this album.
Exmortus Beyond the Fall of Time
On their second album Exmortus go for a less hyper-flashy, more streamlined Bay Area thrash-like approach to their songwriting. But of course the riffs and solos are just as mind-melting as you would expect. The production compared to In Hatred's Flame is stronger and thicker, another big plus.

Pissgrave Suicide Euphoria
Remember the guttural sounding, raw and maggot-infested death metal filth of early Carcass, Repulsion and Autopsy? Well you better strap yourself, because Pissgrave takes that sound to the next level, creating one of the ugliest and gruesome records I've heard in a while. And they managed to pull it off in a way that the songs don't become self parody they hit hard and heavy, the lo-fi buzz guitar sound is great and the vocals are just insane. Not an easy listen but highly recommanded for fans of the genre.

Thanatos Violent Death Rituals
Dutch underground cult favorites Thanatos return with another piece of old school death-thrash metal that might not reinvent the wheel in any way but shows more than enough variety to be above the rest, taking notes even from death/doom and Swedish melodeath at places. The production is punchy and dynamic, the guitar work (especially the leads) are excellent and the vocals are oozing from pure venom.

Usual business for Exmortus which means over the top, neoclassical thrash with viking themes, and ultra-wankery guitar solos. Unfortunately not as strong and hard hitting as their third album and doesn't even have a sense of identity like the first two thus making it their weakest so far. But it's still enjoyable.

Ketzer Cloud Collider
A much better infusion of the controlled agression of their early records and their more melodic side. Fast-paced riffs and dynamic tempo changes with the atmosphere of classic heavy metal and even post-metal at places. The songwriting is still a bit iffy at places but I'm starting to make peace with Ketzer's new sound.

Kreator Hate Über Alles
Some welcomed injection of some of that chaotic agression from their early 2000's material while still firmly staying on the melodic/classic heavy metal influenced path Kreator stepped on with Phantom Antichrist. Less consistent than the previous two albums, but has a number of bangers with excellent production and musicianship. Suprisingly low average, this is not even close to being a dud.
L.A. Guns Waking The Dead
L.A. Guns The Missing Peace
Laaz Rockit No Stranger to Danger
An immensely better production and more developed songwriting helps Lazz Rockit overcome the banes of their first album. While it still ventures more on the glam/heavy metal side, songs like "Backbreaker" already display the kind of energetic, agressive yet catchy type of thrash that the band would fully commit to on their next records.

Mekong Delta Tales of a Future Past
Whoever did the mixing on this deserves to be slapped in the face with a dead fish: Unbalanced and muddled, with the lead guitars and sometimes even the vocals burried behind the other instruments. Now the album itself is often more about atmosphere than pure tech-riffing but don't worry, Mekong Delta can still deliver the goods on that front.
Memoriam Requiem for Mankind
A much better follow-up to their medicore second record, Requiem For Mankind is pretty much the closest one could get to old-school Bolt Thrower. Muddy, dirty, hard-hitting riffs, tight pacing and great sound makes for an excellent death metal album.
Meshuggah Contradictions Collapse
Meshuggah Koloss
Metal Church The Weight of the World
Bumped up my rating, this is actually nowhere near as bad as its average might suggest. In fact it's pretty solid on all front, a bit inconsistent but enjoyable. Commading hard hitting riffs, solos, strong dynamic vocals, MC fans should revisit this one.

Honestly I was shocked at how much I liked this. While it doesn't breaks any new ground, Obituary manage to deliver their trendmark mid-paced groovy death metal with a much more focused, catchy and energetic delivery compared to their previous albums. The brisk pacing, the beefy production and the atmospheric guitar leads also bring major plus points. Easily the most enjoyable stuff the band made since Frozen in Time.

The songwirting is less cohesive than "13" and it runs out of steam by the end, but still a good album. Also Dave Lombardo did the drum work on this and he really shines on the faster tracks.

Yngwie Malmsteen Fire & Ice
The first instance of Yngwie Malmsteen releasing an overlong and musically inconsistent album (two features that sadly became consistent problems with him). Yngwie Malmsteen The Seventh Sign
Yngwie Malmsteen Alchemy
Yngwie Malmsteen Facing the Animal
Holy crap are the ballads so cheesy and bad even by Yngwie standards. Thankfully the rest of the album is very solid, although a bit predicatable neo-classical power metal carried by Mats Leven's voice and the maestro's six-string wizardry.

Serviceable, by-the-numbers 70's hard rock which is a far cry from the hights Whitesnake would go on but still enjoyable at parts. The uptempo "Nighthawk" and the instrumental "Belgian Tom's Hat Trick" with Jon Lord's keyboard wizardry are easily the biggest highlights.

Annihilator Suicide Society
A mixture of Kill of the King and latter year Annihilator, this album focuses much more on melody than technicality. Most of the songs are pretty good and catchy, the solos are amazing, Jeff's voice is in decent form. But in overall quality it is a stepdown from Feast and if you heard some of their earlier stuff, this album will contain nothing surprising.

By all accounts this should be a masterpiece but the compositions while certianly epic they are also not very memorable, and the production is borderline abysmal. Blind Guardian has enough sonwriting experience and professionalism to make this decent but what instead of the big bang they intended this album, it just comes of as a whimper.

Destruction Under Attack
For a veteran thrash metal band, that managed to re-energize themselves several times over the decades, Destruction's "Under Attack" is stunningly mediocre. While they were never too creative or technical in their songwriting, this album shows serious signs of stagnation with most of the tracks here feeling overly similiar to their pervious efforts and lacking energy in their execution. Oh and the lyrics are especially cringeworthy even by the genre's standard.

In Flames Soundtrack to Your Escape
In Flames A Sense of Purpose
In Flames were struggling even before this album, but this marked the point where they started to make just downright bad and disappointing records with Anders vocals getting worse and worse. The Mirror's Truth EP with the unreleased songs are better than anything here and that's sad.
In Flames Sounds of a Playground Fading
In Flames I, the Mask
The key for musical redemption is right in front of In Flames and they just keep pissing it away. The first four songs are easily the strongest material they written in years, with a clear throwback to the Come Clarity days. And then you have songs like (This Is Our) House which is the same dreadful stuff that made Battles and Siren Charms unlistenable. A very inconsistent record that pictures a band broken by it's own irresolvable identity crisis.

Ketzer does a full 180 degree change here by eliminating the raw, fast paced thrash/black metal angle of their music and putting a bigger focus on calm passages, clean guitars and mid-tempo pacing. Unfortunately with this they pretty much discarded nearly everything why I enjoyed them on the first place. A decent but tepid listen.

Skeletonwitch's debut most certianly has the energy and the eclectic black/thrash metal style for which they became known for. Unfortunately the album's overall quality is seriously hampered by the demo tape-like sound and the messy, inconsistent songwriting. Every Rotten Corpse Shall Burn is the main highlight.
Slayer Undisputed Attitude
Slayer Repentless
A couple of good songs here and there (Repentless, Vices, Cast the First Stone), better production than World Painted Blood but overall very predictable and pedestrian stuff. Not letting Gary Holt participate in the songwriting was a big mistake from Slayer's part, because Kerry King is seriously running out of good and memorable riffs.

1000MODS Youth of Dissent
Okay for some reason 1000Mods decided to abandon pretty much everything they're known for and become a third-rate garage rock band with an overly produced, striped down sound and songwriting. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
A Pale Horse Named Death When The World Becomes Undone
As someone who really enjoyed their last two albums, can I ask what the fuck is this? Bland, uninspired and a flat-out snoozefest, with none of the gothic atmosphere and great riffs. A big disappointment.
AC/DC Blow Up Your Video
Accept Predator
First five songs are actually pretty solid, but then the album takes a huge dive in quality from which it never recovers. Primitive has a great shot at being one of the worst Accept songs ever written. No wonder the band went on hiatus after this one.

Living Death Vengeance of Hell
The original release of Living Death's debut album Vengeance of Hell, had one of the worst production I've heard on a metal album, so I dreaded to re-listen this but much to my suprise it received a well-made remaster several years ago. Unfortunately not even the cleaned up guitar mix can fix the very simplistic songwriting, the dozen-of-a-dime riffs and the godawful vocals by Thorsten "Toto" Bergmann, which make Vio-lence's Sean Killian sound like James Rivera by comparison.
Liz Phair Somebody's Miracle

In Flames Down, Wicked and No Good
In Flames Clayman (20th Anniversary Edition)
Looks like making shitty new albums are not enough for In Flames, now they want to retroactively ruin their good stuff as well. Can't wait for the 30 anniversary edition of The Jester Race re-recorded with awful vocals and production.
Joey Belladonna Spells Of Fear
Bad with a capital B. Rushed, unfocused and monotonous songwriting with even worse production and vocals.

Six Feet Under Graveyard Classics 2
Six Feet Under Graveyard Classics
Six Feet Under True Carnage
Bears the dubious honor of being one of the absolute worst death metal albums I've ever heard. The Ice-T cameo is fucking hysterical and every other song is lifeless and miserable as well.

Waking The Cadaver Perverse Recollections Of A Necromangler
If you think this is as bad as everyone here say it is...nope it's even worse. It's like listening to factory machines, pig slaughter and toilet flush all at the same time while drunken hobos vomit all over you including into your ear. Now I know that sounds pretty fucking disgusting but that is still the closest I can came to describe this pile of turd.
